Things You Can Do After Dropping Out Οf College
Have you decided to drop out of college? Or, maybe you are not just there but pretty close to dropping out. The decision to drop out of college is and should never be a whimsical one. It involves an active consideration of your surrounding circumstances that ultimately determine your future. Not everyone drops out to start a business or explore different career options. Some people just can’t afford to study at college or aren’t mentally prepared to continue for a while. In fact, there may be other reasons as well. However, if you thought dropping out will simply solve your problems, then you are being careless. There are many parameters to take under consideration and what you will actually do after dropping out is the most important thing you need to think about.
To help you out we have compiled 5 suggestions on what you can do after dropping out of college:
- Start interning
Often it happens that students drop out of college because they do not feel comfortable continuing education in a particular degree program. They can’t be blamed; we don’t come with a guidebook on what may or may not interest us. Exploring and experiencing options as much as one can is fundamental. If you are dropping out for this reason, then it is advised that you apply for internships. For example, you had dropped out of graduate school because you didn’t want to pursue a specialization in, say, Constitutional Law. So, you should apply for places where different areas of law are practiced such as criminal law, labor law, international law, etc. Yes, you will have to dedicate quite some time to these but it is quite likely that you will be able to make a more informed decision about what you want to pursue in the future. - Get a job
Now, if you are dropping out of your Bachelor’s degree program, then you barely have any formal university education. This can come in your way of getting a job, especially a full-time job. You may have your reasons for doing a job right away but there are challenges ahead. If you are not keen on a particular kind of job, then try experimenting with more flexible categories of work such as content writing, sales, and whatnot. Full-time employment may or may not happen immediately but part-time will most likely. Many part-time jobs do not press too much on higher education qualifications so make sure you have shortlisted the places where you should apply. - Start your entrepreneurial journey
Many dropouts start their entrepreneurial journey and quite a few of them have been global successes. But, you should know that Rome wasn’t built in a day. There is no magic remedy that translates your entrepreneurial dreams into immediate reality. If your reason to drop out of college is to start this journey, you will need a solid foundation to start. The foundational work will have to be done before you actually drop out. I am not asking you to have a business already before you drop out but should certainly have a blueprint of what you can achieve and how you can achieve it. During college, you should arrange for necessary funds or find avenues where you can do that from, network with resourceful persons, and decide the modus operandi of the business among many other things. - Take counseling sessions and online education
Let us say, you don’t want to do internships or work part-time until you decide what you want to do. You can very easily find career counseling sessions many of which are long-term and can effectively guide you on your future. In fact, if your budget allows, you may want to hire a career consultant who can assist you in assessing available options and the manner to go ahead with them. Meanwhile, you should explore available opportunities to pursue online education in areas where you think you can experiment. Doing these two will help in shaping a comprehensive outlook towards your future plans. Perhaps, you will find what you have been looking for! - Or, take a break and do nothing
Sometimes you are just tired of all the hustle and want to disconnect yourself before you do anything. We are not always mentally ready for college. Parents, friends, relatives may have pressurized you to take up college as soon as high school is finished. Perhaps, you were never in the right zone to start your college years. Don’t trivialize the feeling of being mentally unprepared. If your circumstances allow, drop everything and take a break. Do whatever you feel like, explore whatever options you want, or simply relax by the window and read a favorite novel.
