These 10 billionaires lost $185 billion since the start of the year

January 2022 was a painful month for billionaires – Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest person, shed $39.3 billion from his fortune. Mark Zuckerberg dropped $35.9 billion, while Jeff Bezos’s wealth fell $28.4 billion. Changpeng Zhao, the chief executive officer of crypto exchange Binance, lost $24.6 billion, is now worth $71.3 billion.

Changpeng Zhao of Binance dropped $17.7 billion, while Mark Zuckerberg’s wealth fell $10.4 billion. Bernard Arnault, Europe’s richest person, saw his net worth drop by $10.5 billion. Of the world’s 10 wealthiest people, only one avoided losing money this week: Warren Buffett.

Microsoft’s co-founder Bill Gates and former chief executive Steve Ballmer have each seen their fortunes drop by more than $9 billion since the start of the year.

While the billionaires may have suffered share-price losses this month, the fortunes of the 10 richest people – all men – have roughly doubled since the start of the pandemic.
