Humor For All Ages – How Do Kids Cope With It And How To Help Them Develop?

Humor has been praised all time long for its benefits in our psychological health and mood. The thing is humor is a part of our lives from the day we are born and as we evolve so does our perception of what is funny. It often acts as a defense mechanism to hide parts of our personality that we don’t find very appealing. In any case, it is a perfect way to approach all conditions in life. There is no greater happiness than to raise a child with humor and hear it laugh. This sound is, especially for parents, the incentive to withstand all difficulties and the tonic “injection” of the day. As much as we think that the sense of humor is something we are born with, in fact, we are nurtured from the first days of our lives. Children who have grown up with parents who make jokes with each other, tell jokes, and have fun even without a specific reason, are sure to imitate their behavior.

  1. What makes laughter so great?
Laughter is an excellent way of connecting us to reality. It is the best way to understand difficulties and overcome them. It’s the same with kids. Humor strengthens their self-confidence and helps them keep a positive life attitude. Laughter can easily reduce a child’s anxiety and it is more likely for us through a joke to distract him from difficulty. The optimism caused in a child who grows up with humor will seem particularly effective for the rest of his life as this person will manage easier difficulties and misfortunes. Research has shown that people who laugh more are healthier, are less likely to get depressed, have fewer heartbeats, and a better immune system.
  2. The perception of humor for kids
The interpretations that have been given to the word ”humor” are many but briefly, we could say that it is the difference in what we expect to become and in what is done. As the child’s memory progresses, expectations for the development of events are created. When these are brought up the children find it amusing. If Dad decides to wear on his head a pot, or if in their favorite fairy tale The Sound of animals changes, children perceive the uproar and laugh. During certain ages in our lives, we tend to laugh at different things. It is important from the first days when a baby comes into the world to see us smile and make jokes. Babies and especially infants are imitative and always want to behave like their parents. Babies don’t understand your humor but they know when you’re smiling and that’s enough for them. Between 9 and 15 months, babies are well aware of the world they have come to and can realize that. For example, when mom puts on her head a piece of clothing or makes funny sounds, she does something unexpected and therefore funny.
  3. Humour for children up to 3 years
The surprise is the key element for children up to three years of age to perceive humor. The unexpected tickling, our sudden entry into space, the funny clothes are among the first jokes we make to a child. As they develop their linguistic skills we can introduce into their everyday life funny rhythms and strange-sounding words. At this age, it is very important for the development of humor in the child to laugh with their jokes even when they are not very successful.
  4. What about older kids?
The perception of jokes for preschools and children older than three years is gradually changing. The inconsistency between picture and sound seems funny in this age group, and little by little the first jokes can make their appearance. Cartoons help a lot in the development of humor in this phase as the child visualizes situations that escape from reality.
  5. Kids at school
As children grow older it is the extravagance that makes them laugh. They may sometimes seem silly to us, but to young children jokes based on exaggeration are a way of life. We don’t need to quarrel with them, nor dissuade them from such jokes. As long as we take care to tell them jokes and provoke them to laugh in smarter ways. A child who has cultivated a sense of humor from an early age is sure to find a way to develop it growing up.
