Sanctuaries To Provide Shelter To Elephants Around The World

Since when we are kids, we have some love for animals, and to top that elephants draw some different attention.  Sanctuaries provide a home to elephants who have been riding, logging, street begging, or working in a circus and also who have been rescued.

These sanctuaries also provide food, water, and medical help to elephants. Here is a list of the best sanctuaries in the world:

  1. Chobe National Park, Botswana
In Africa, the Chobe National park Botswana has the largest elephant population. If you take a safari tour you are sure to witness many elephants. There are about 1,20,00 to 1,30,000 in the country itself. The best time to visit is the dry season which is from June till November. You can come across elephants’ lines around the banks of the river and regularly cross paths to gaze around. The best way you can have a good sight of the elephants is the boat safari which is a cruise and you can click amazing photographs as well.
  2. Elephant Nature Park, Thailand
Situated in the Northern Thailand’s Chiang Mai Province this park is a treat for elephant lovers. This place brings in rescued elephants from circuses and camps across the country and works as a rehabilitation center. It is 60km away from the city and here elephants are free to roam and move around in their natural surroundings. The main motto of the park is to promote elephant-friendly tourism and you can also do volunteer here in different programs.
  3. Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, Malawi
Nkhotakaota was once an almost empty forest has now become home to more than 1,500 elephants and more than 2000 other species of animals. The reserve is near the Chipata mountain and there you can witness rivers flowing through hills. This reserve is the oldest yet largest reserve in the whole of Malawi. It spreads across an area of 1,800km.
  4. Sayaboury Elephant Conservation Centre, Laos
Laos long back was known as the “land of a million elephants” however, the tables have turned and because of poaching, deforestation, and rapid increase in the urban area there are only about 400 elephants left in the wild, and 400 are in the conservation Centre. The conservation Centre promotes the Guests to meet retired elephants, provide medical care and also provide employment to the Mahouts who have worked for them in the past.
  5. Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe
The Hwange national park has been growing in terms of the elephants surviving and there has been progressive growth. In the park, there are about 45,000 elephants. The view of the park is incredibly beautiful and the best time to visit this park is the dry season which is from June up till October. The very beautiful Victoria falls is also close to this place.
  6. Periyar National Park, India
This park was designated tiger reserve in the year 1978 and is amongst the most populated reserve in the south region of India. It is best known for elephants. The park is located in the southern part of Kerala and near Kumily. Periyar is vast and has a very rich diversity that has lakes, mountains, and forests. You can go on a boat trip to the Periyar lake and enjoy the wildlife view.
  7. Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, Sri Lanka
The Born Free Foundation started this great initiative now known as Elephant Transit Home. They look after baby elephants who have been orphaned or are injured in the wild whilst the transit home also works as a rehabilitation center. After the elephants are fully grown or have recovered from their injuries a radio-collar is put and they are then set free in the Udawalawe National Park but in small groups.
