Best Places to Celebrate Christmas in Mexico

Christmas is the biggest festival in the country. But the celebrations in the US seem pretty modest when you see how the Mexicans celebrate it.

They have brought together several cultures to come up with some extraordinary Christmas traditions. This shouldn’t be a surprise because they are already known for their Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) customs.

If you are planning to celebrate Christmas in Mexico, here’s the list of the best Christmas celebrations:

  1. Oaxaca
Oaxaca is situated at the foothills of the Sierra Madre mountain ranges. Thanks to the Mixtec and Zapotec cultures, Oaxaca makes lots of money because of heritage tourism.

You’ll be left mesmerized by the architecture of the archaeological sites and colonial structures of this beautiful city. The architecture of Oaxaca is so captivating that UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1987.

The best time to visit is between December 16th and 31st. The festive spirit is strong and exciting on those days. You’ll enjoy peculiar Christmas activities such as breaking of the plates and various other games.

  2. Chiapas Highlands
The Chiapas Highlands is among the most unusual places to visit in Mexico during Christmas. Tourists are fascinated by the Chiapas because they can have fun in the lively colonial towns and explore ancient ruins in one day. The Canyon del Sumidero and the Sima de Las Cotorras also attract many tourists.

The serene rivers and splendid waterfalls of the Highlands offer an excellent respite from the busy life in the city. The highlands are full of mountains that are occupied by indigenous communities. Some of the communities residing in these mountains belong to the Mayan traditions!

The decor of all the towns is marvelous around Christmas. You can even be part of several holiday-themed games.

  3. Cabo San Lucas
Cabo San Lucas is located in the Baja California Sur state. You can do many water activities along the endless beachline of the Sea of Cortez.

Cabo has the only living Coral Reef in this sea, and it is home to sharks, whales, and many exotic fishes. No wonder this charming resort city is often considered a “paradise on earth.”

The hotels and resorts in Cabo organize many activities during the festive period. Participating in these fun activities is a brilliant way of celebrating Christmas in Cabo.

  4. Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta is a beach resort city located on the Bay of Banderas alongside the Pacific Ocean in the state of Jalisco.  You will enjoy taking part in the fun activities that take place on its 40-miles long stretch of coastline.

In Puerto Vallarta, there’s something for everyone. Despite having a small-town reputation, it also has some sophisticated ocean-facing resorts. You can taste delicious food for a wide range of budgets.

During the Christmas season, you can go shopping in the markets and explore the architecture of buildings and churches built in the previous century. The festive celebrations feature holiday-themed drinks, food, and piñatas.

  5. San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel de Allende is situated in the central Mexico highlands in Guanajuato. Tourists flock to San Miguel de Allende every year mainly because of the antique charm, awe-inspiring Baroque architecture, and the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel.

All the structures of San Miguel de Allende exude Spanish colonial charm. Art lovers are huge fans of the fine architectural details in this cobblestoned city.

Many Americans visit in the winter to escape the harsh winter up north. While the climate is quite welcoming, the festival and the celebrations provide enough warmth.

You don’t have to wait for Christmas to visit this quaint city because piñatas, ponche, and posadas can be seen here year-round.
