Top engineering colleges of South Korea, 2020

Educational institutions in South Korea attract many foreign students thanks to the low cost of living and a high standard of living. South Korea has a balance of traditional structures and modern amenities. The locals are warm towards international students.

Students love the cheap and tasty food readily available in South Korea. The nightlife is quite lively. The pubs are open till the early morning hours. Vacations are fun as you can travel to nearby holiday destinations in China and Japan without burning a hole in your pocket.

South Korea is home to some globally recognized universities known for their high employment rates. Although you don’t necessarily have to be fluent in Korean, it helps in finding high-paying jobs at international companies. It also becomes more convenient to climb the corporate ladder.   1. Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology

    Accreditations: Upon standardizing with programs in the US, the Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology (ABET) considers its graduate programs to be in the top 10%.
    Acceptance rates: Local students: 13-18%; International students: 11-15%
    About 600 students from more than 70 countries study at this university every year. From a global perspective, this makes KAIST one of the most ethnically diverse universities in South Korea. Students are asked to choose their major in the second year of the program and not during enrollment. So, students have enough time to make a well-informed decision about their major. Yi So-Yeon, the first Korean to fly in space, and Tony Kim, the founder of ProtoPie, are KAIST’s most notable alumni. Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology was ranked No. 135 globally among 500 universities, according to the CEOWORLD magazine University Ranking 2020.
  2. Korea University

    Korea University is one of Korea’s SKY universities. These universities are prestigious and thus not easy to get into. You can think of them as the Ivy League. Korea University has its campuses in Seoul and Sejong. Along with the intense study programs, students are also encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities. Because that is crucial to the overall development of a student. Korean is the primary language of instruction. So, the university has a special tutoring program for students facing difficulties while learning. And it is free of cost.   3. Yonsei University

    Acceptance rates: Local students: 1-2%, International students: 30-40%
    Yonsei University is another SKY university. It offers several scholarships that can cover your accommodation along with the tuition. The courses are challenging and aim to mold you into a professional that can handle any pressure in the real world. Research is a big part of Yonsei University’s engineering programs.   4. Chonnam National University

    Admissions via an entrance test
    This is the only national university in this list apart from KAIST. CNU offers programs in Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Korean is the primary language of instruction. Apart from the brilliant teaching capabilities, CNU also offers many research opportunities. It has an Electronic Research Center. Its research funds are greater than $150 million! And a research complex dedicated to R&D in AI is to be opened soon in Gwangju.
  5. Sejong University
    Degree courses:
    Bachelors, Master, Doctoral
    Accreditations: KCUE, IEQAS
    Admissions via an entrance test
    Sejong University offers more than 10 bachelor degree programs. You may pursue the postgraduate degree programs upon the completion of your bachelor’s program. It has been named a Resource Development Specialization University. The National Research Foundation of Korea has named its Graphene Research institute a Priority Research Center.  Sejong University was awarded a Brain Korea 21 project thanks to its focus on research. Moreover, the Department of National Defense Systems was also set up at Sejong University.
  6. Yeungnam University
    Degree courses:
    Bachelors, Masters
    Accreditations: KCUE, IEQAS
    Admissions via an entrance test
    Yeungnam University is known for its top-class professors and the best research environment. It aims to cultivate global perspectives for students’ academic and intellectual growth. Past students have appreciated the spacious library and comfortable hostel. Students also have access to advanced sports infrastructure. Since the primary language of instruction is Korean, you should improve your proficiency in Korean well in advance.
