Countries Holding The Most U.S. Debt: Who (and How Much)?

Federal Reserve Building Washington DC

In 2019, the United States national debt currently sits at $21.97 trillion — a big, scary number. The U.S. debt to China is $1.11 trillion as of June 2019. That’s 17.26% of the $6.43 trillion in Treasury bills, notes, and bonds held by foreign countries.

China has the greatest amount of the United States national debt held by a foreign country. Japan comes second at $1.06 trillion. It’s followed by Brazil at $306 billion, the United Kingdom at $300 billion, and Ireland at $269 billion.

The rest of the $21.97 trillion national debt is owned by either the American people or by the U.S. government itself: U.S. Government and Federal Reserve ($8.1 trillion), Mutual funds ($2.06 trillion), Pension funds ($0.92 trillion), Banks ($0.77 trillion), State and local governments ($0.69 trillion), and Other investors ($3.18 trillion).
