Top 5 UK Institutions In Reuters World’s Most Innovative Universities Ranking 2018

Each year the release of the Reuters’ annual ranking of the 100 most innovative colleges generates a great deal of interest, excitement, and debate. Stanford from the United States has topped the list. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University bagged the second and third positions.

The rankings were prepared based on the indicators such as the number of research papers published and how many patent filings a school made in the last year. The United States dominated the list of top 10 universities.

While coming to UK’s representation, five institutes have been featured in the Reuters Top 100: The World’s Most Innovative Universities – 2018. Let’s explore them!

The Top 5 UK universities In The Reuters Ranking Of The World’s Most Innovative Universities:

1. Imperial College London.
Global Rank: 8
Imperial College London filed 297 patents between 2011 and 2016. 33.3% of those were subsequently granted. Notable alumni include Hedge fund billionaire Alan Howard; Cyrus Pallonji Mistry, former chairman of the Tata Group; and Ian Read Chairman and CEO, Pfizer.



2. University of Cambridge.

Global Rank: 18
University of Cambridge filed 224 patents between 2011 and 2016. 39.7% of those were subsequently granted. Notable alumni include Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic advisor for Allianz and former chief executive of British Petroleum John Browne.

3. University of Oxford.
Global Rank: 40
University of Cambridge filed 469 patents between 2011 and 2016. 22.6% of those were subsequently granted. Notable alumni include Tony Blair, Tim Berners-Lee, and Rupert Murdoch.

4. University College London.
Global Rank: 48
University of Cambridge filed 232 patents between 2011 and 2016. 29.7% of those were subsequently granted. Notable alumni include Alexander Graham Bell and former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

5. University of Manchester.
Global Rank: 53
University of Cambridge filed 123 patents between 2011 and 2016. 30.1% of those were subsequently granted. Notable alumni include Benedict Cumberbatch and leading figures of Alternative Comedy: Ben Elton, Ade Edmonson and Rik Mayall.
