Pichai on SGE and Gemini Era

According to insights from the latest earnings call of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, people are witnessing the dawn of the “Gemini era” at Google. Based on a press release statement from the company, the Search Generative Experience (SGE) and AI will remain integral to Google’s strategy in this new era. Despite speculations on social media, SGE is not fading away. While it remains uncertain if Google will fully launch SGE as the default experience in 2024, ongoing testing and adjustments continue, with CEO Sundar Pichai expressing confidence in its progress.

Regarding SGE, Sundar Pichai emphasized that we are in the “earliest days” of SGE, signaling its enduring significance. The focus is on making SGE faster for users, with a notable 40% reduction in latency in English in the U.S.

As far as Generative AI in Search is concerned, Pichai highlighted the application of generative AI to Search, stating that it enables a broader range of information delivery and addresses new types of questions. SGE is already available through Search Labs in seven languages, catering to complex inquiries and delivering more satisfying, conversational, and intricate query responses.

In addition, the launch of Gemini 1.0 in December marks the commencement of the “Gemini era,” with Gemini Ultra on the horizon. This model, designed for highly complex tasks, is part of Google’s vision to combine text, images, audio, video, and code in a multi-modal way, applicable across diverse platforms.

Google is actively experimenting with ads native to SGE, exploring formats that seamlessly integrate with the new search experience. Philipp Schindler, Google’s chief business officer, mentioned the success of ads positioned above or below the AI-powered overview in providing users with relevant options for action and business connections.

In summarizing the progress, Sundar Pichai expressed optimism about the advancements in Search Generative Experience and AI.
