Legal Battle Unfolds: Elon Musk Alleges that Sam Altman Breached of Promise

Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, accusing the company of betraying the original mission to serve humanity by forming a lucrative partnership with Microsoft. The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco, alleges that Altman and OpenAI’s co-founder, Greg Brockman, reneged on their commitment to establish an open-source, non-profit organization, instead prioritizing profit-making activities, which constitutes a breach of contract.

According to Musk’s legal team, OpenAI kept the development of its most advanced AI model, GPT-4, under wraps, contrary to the transparency initially promised. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but resigned from its board in 2018, is also known for his roles in leading companies like Tesla and SpaceX, as well as acquiring Twitter for $44 billion in October 2022.

The lawsuit comes amid upheaval within OpenAI, as Altman was terminated by the company’s former board last year, citing the need to safeguard its mission of advancing AI for the benefit of humanity. However, Altman swiftly returned to the company with a revamped board shortly thereafter. OpenAI is reportedly in the process of appointing new board members in March.

OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, gained widespread popularity within six months of its launch in November 2022, becoming the fastest-growing software application globally. Its success spurred competition from tech giants like Microsoft and Alphabet, as well as numerous startups, all vying to capitalize on the burgeoning interest in AI-driven chatbots and secure substantial funding.
