What Are The Top 20 Smartest Cities In The World For 2017
Turns Out New York is the smartest city in the world for 2017, according to the IESE Business School’s Cities in Motion Index 2017, which ranks the world’s best (“smartest”) cities. It is followed by the British capital London, which grabbed second place, and Paris, in third.
European and North American cities dominate the list, accounting for 18 of the top 20 cities. Boston took the 4th place, while San Francisco, Washington DC, Seoul, Tokyo, Berlin, and Amsterdam round out the top 10.
Of the top 20 smartest cities on the planet, eight are European (London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Zurich, Vienna, Geneva, and Munich), seven are in the US (New York City, Boston, San Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Baltimore), two are in Asia (Seoul and Tokyo), two are in Oceanian (Melbourne and Sydney), and one is Canadian city (Toronto).
To compile the index, the authors analyze 10 different dimensions of urban life: economy, environment, governance, human capital, international outreach, mobility and transportation, public management, social cohesion, technology, and urban planning.
In the Middle East, Abu Dhabi (64th) was the highest ranked city on the list, followed by Dubai, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Haifa. While, in Africa, Cape Town (133rd) remains the highest ranked city on the list, followed by Tunis in Tunisia, Johannesburg, Durban, and Cairo in Egypt.
