In praise of failure

Francesco Pagano

Fail fast, deep and often, state start uppers and business gurus. Dive into the pool and learn to swim. You learn by making mistakes. Mistake is a unique gift. An opportunity to discover new things. New doors will open. What am I saying, big gates. Everything looks wonderful.

Until you make a mistake, in your real life, in your relationships and in your work. A real, big, fat mistake, a super-error. Then, you find that the problem is you, for whatever reason. The super-error is a truck hitting you, full frontal. You are alone. You sink into a black hole. The crumbling of your life and your certainties is not only physical, but emotional. The beauty of rebirth does not erase the pain and struggle of rising again. Thriving in risk and facing the famous black swan, as Taleb says, does not erase the bitterness of the bite to eat down. And you only must do that. The stomach-ache, to quote Vasco Rossi, a singer, is with you, with you only, not me.

I had the pleasure to moderate the first TEDx Piazza Campo de Fiori in Rome on February 22, which brought together stories that have the beauty and bitterness of a world that is not yet perfect and ideal. Our stories are human, because they taste like super-errors.

Giuseppe Pino Cantatore has lived and, perhaps, lives two parallel lives. He is the founder of “4 bee other minds,” an initiative, born within the four walls of a prison, that aims to explore human potential through the confrontation of ideas and empathy, Cantatore is now the first private employer of the prison population in Italy, representing hope for those who have been defeated by error, often forever. This is where transformation and rebirth start.

Paolo di Paolo is a writer and journalist who has published numerous critically acclaimed books, including “Send Me So Much Life” and “Where You All Were.” We do not do justice to his bibliography here. In his latest book, “Novel without Humans,” he investigates past personal disasters. Error is repeating and learning, as the great Gianni Rodari said.

Silvia Degrandi is an Italian actress, a pure talent, known for her intense and versatile performances both on the big screen and in the theater. Her career is studded with memorable roles, in independent films and critically acclaimed theatrical productions. We recall, and it is an injustice to mention only one, Paolo Sorrentino’s Parthenope from 2024. One needs to acknowledge one’s fears, uncertainties, vulnerabilities. It is necessary to embrace all that we are, to know how to grow and live, Degrandi tells us.

Antonio Losito is a radio and TV author and writer. He has worked on more than 300 Rai, Mediaset and Sky prime and second nights, including Una Pezza di Lundini, Gialappa’s, Stand Up Comedy, Zelig, The Voice sitcom. Losito tells us about a famous case of a super-error, that of penicillin, which was discovered by an Italian, before the well-known Fleming, also by mistake.

Claudia Parzani, a lawyer, is a partner in the law firm Linklaters, president of Borsa Italiana and vice president of Il Sole 24 Ore. In the past, she was president of Allianz in Italy and Valore D. And to say she failed the exam to become a lawyer. And she has a life studded with mistakes, as she puts it. In her latest book, “The Outsider Revolution. The New Leadership That Will Change the World,” she invites us to break the rules and create new leadership.

Laura Carafoli is a top media professional with a long and distinguished career in the entertainment industry. She is senior vice president Content Networks & Streaming Local Productions Italy & Iberia, for Discovery Communications. The entertainment world is merciless, almost like trading. Making mistakes is normal. The pressure is a lot. There are super-error days, but every new day brings opportunities, so you just must move on, and if there is a mistake, just deal with it quickly, without politics, guilt and drama.

Nicola Macchitella is a scientist. His career path is the list of global tech giants, including Meta, Yahoo, Tumblr. An expert in artificial intelligence, he leads software development for self-driving cars at Waymo, Google’s leading robotics and automation subsidiary. Nicola, a Roman from Rome, continues to shape the future of technology and mobility, not without barriers and mistakes. Her plan is to reduce traffic accidents to zero. Technology and humanity will succeed.

Maki Galimberti. Renowned Italian photographer, known for his portraits of celebrities and prominent figures in the world of art, culture and entertainment. Galimberti has collaborated with most prestigious international magazines and has exhibited his work in art galleries around the world. His ability to capture the essence of subjects through a unique and recognizable visual style has earned him numerous awards and a prominent position in the contemporary photography scene. From mistakes can come great photos, but you have to understand and know this, as only a human and professional can.

Michael Spence. U.S. economist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2001 for his contributions to asymmetric information theory, along with Stiglitz and Akerlof. Spence has had a prestigious academic career, teaching at institutions such as Stanford University and Harvard Business School. Economics is never the battleground, where everything is transparent, and the best always wins, or where demand meets supply, at just the right point. Spence flows through the big issues, where we have failed, as a global community, from globalization, to sustainability, to geo-politics. These are super-errors, which must be our homework for the future, in a society, ours, that is always evolving. A shopping list that must inform the actions of governments, just now that we have new, perhaps strange leaders, everywhere, deciding our fate

Muhammad Yunus. Bengali economist and banker, famous for his pioneering work in microcredit and microfinance. He is now prime minister, on an interim basis, of Bangladesh. Yunus founded the Grameen Bank (Village Bank) in 1983, an institution that offers unsecured loans to poor rural communities, with the aim of stimulating entrepreneurship and helping people out of poverty by opening credit especially to women. For his efforts to fight poverty, Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. The question here: whose fault is it? Poor women, through no fault of their own, do not have access to credit. Banks follow the rules, and do not give money without collateral, so as not to risk the interests of shareholders. They are all right, in a wrong world. Until we change the system, one micro-loan at a time.

Stefania Sinesi. Mistakes that cost lives. Fragile young lives. Anorexia and bulimia are the leading cause of death among adolescents. The super-error here is an invisible barrier of prejudice, of shame, of the gap between what is and what should be in our teenage minds a perfect world, a perfect look. Never Give Up wants to help you break down barriers, to ask for help, to not feel alone and judged. Stefania Sinesi is a Psychotherapist, university lecturer, President and Scientific Director of Never Give Up. The key here is in open, transparent dialogue with the psychotherapist. It is never easy to talk to those who are suffering and about these things, especially when it comes to adolescents.

Giovanni, a.k.a. Gianrico, Carofiglio is a renowned Italian writer and politician, known for his novels, which have been hugely successful both in Italy and abroad. Among his most famous books are “Unaware Witness,” “With Eyes Closed,” and “The Past is a Foreign Land,” just to name a few. In his latest book, “In Praise of Ignorance and Error,” Carofiglio invites us to rethink error and ignorance, concepts usually associated with failure and shame.

Myrta Merlino is a journalist and television host. On La7, she hosted “Effetto Domino” and “L’Aria che Tira.” Since September 2023, she has been reporting on Italy from the studio of “Pomeriggio Cinque” on Channel 5. The latest of her books is “Women Defying the Storm” (2021). She has always fought for freedom of the press and for the rights of women and those who are different. What might appear as a super-error, namely the unexpected birth of twins, will become a gift and the defining event of her life.

“For those who make mistakes, stumble, fall and get back up. For those who dare when others hesitate. Error teaches, shapes, reveals paths no one has yet traveled. Those who fear error stand firm. Error is a sign that one is moving, that one is trying to change the world. People who change the world are not afraid of making mistakes. They are afraid of not trying. And in the end, it’s those who make mistakes, who learn, who don’t give up, who really make a difference,” Simona Sinesi, university lecturer, writer, vice president of Never Give Up, licensee of TEDx Roma Piazza Campo de Fiori, and creator of the Yunus Center in Italy, tells us.
