Tencent and Baidu to Use DeepSeek AI in Race for Tech Supremacy

Tencent has announced that its Weixin messaging app, China’s largest, is granting some users access to search capabilities powered by DeepSeek’s artificial intelligence model. The company revealed in a statement to Reuters that Weixin is conducting a beta test to trial DeepSeek for search functionality.
This development marks a significant step for Tencent, as it integrates an external AI platform amid fierce competition among tech firms to develop and implement the most advanced AI technologies. A company spokesperson noted that Weixin currently uses Tencent’s proprietary Hunyuan large language model to enhance its AI search capabilities.
A source familiar with the matter stated that Tencent is exploring the integration of DeepSeek with multiple products, including Tencent Cloud AI Code Assistant and Tencent Yuanbao, the company’s AI assistant application.
The beta test is being conducted exclusively on Weixin, which caters to domestic users, and does not extend to its sister app, WeChat, which targets international audiences. Combined, the two apps had reached 1.38 billion users by the end of September.
Baidu Joins the Race with DeepSeek Integration
In a separate announcement, Baidu disclosed that it would fully integrate DeepSeek into its search engine alongside its proprietary Ernie large language model.
The announcement follows DeepSeek’s rapid rise in the AI space. Last month, the startup introduced a free AI assistant, claiming it could operate with lower data usage and at a fraction of the cost of existing services. The assistant quickly surpassed U.S. competitor ChatGPT in downloads on Apple’s App Store.
Chinese Firms Rush to Harness DeepSeek’s Potential
Several major Chinese companies are now moving to leverage DeepSeek’s breakthrough technology. Among them, automaker Great Wall Motor and leading telecommunications providers are incorporating DeepSeek’s AI model into their products and services, aiming to capitalize on its growing reputation and technological advancements.
The race to integrate DeepSeek highlights how China’s tech giants and industry leaders are accelerating their push into AI to maintain competitiveness and drive innovation in their respective sectors.
