The Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR) initiative has sparked a contentious debate involving Ripple Labs, its CEO Brad Garlinghouse, and Pierre Rochard, Vice President of Research at Riot Platforms. The disagreement centers on the priorities and influence Ripple exerts in the cryptocurrency sector.
Pierre Rochard has accused Ripple of channeling its resources into lobbying efforts aimed at blocking the establishment of the SBR. He suggested that Ripple’s focus remains on protecting XRP rather than supporting Bitcoin, which, he argued, poses a greater threat to the reserve than entities like the U.S. Treasury, the Federal Reserve, or lawmakers such as Elizabeth Warren. Rochard claimed that Ripple’s lobbying serves its agenda of promoting central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) based on its own platform, often targeting Bitcoin mining under the Biden administration.
In response, Brad Garlinghouse denied Rochard’s accusations, asserting that Ripple’s efforts actually support the creation of a Bitcoin reserve. He cited progress in establishing a national digital asset reserve as evidence, crediting Trump’s administration for advancing pro-crypto initiatives through executive orders.
Garlinghouse further emphasized that the administration’s actions, including appointing pro-crypto officials to key regulatory roles, align with its campaign commitment to foster innovation in digital currencies. However, these developments have drawn criticism from Bitcoin advocates, who remain skeptical of Ripple’s intentions.
Ripple’s stance highlights the complex interplay of corporate and governmental interests in the cryptocurrency landscape. The broader debate surrounding the SBR underscores the challenges of navigating the future of digital assets while balancing competing priorities and agendas.
