New Electronic Travel Authorization Now Required for U.K. Visitors

Travelers to the U.K. from the U.S., Canada, and over 30 other countries must now obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before their trip, as a new policy takes effect this week. The pre-authorization system, implemented by the U.K. government, aims to streamline border procedures for visitors from countries that do not require a visa to enter.

What is an ETA?

The ETA is a digital travel pre-authorization introduced for visitors from visa-exempt countries. Initially launched in 2024 for citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, the program has now been expanded to include travelers from additional countries, including the U.S. and Canada.

While an ETA simplifies entry for travelers, it does not replace standard immigration checks upon arrival. Similar digital systems are already in place in the U.S. for visitors from the U.K., EU countries, and other visa-exempt nations. By late 2025, EU countries plan to roll out their own digital authorization requirements for U.S. travelers and others.

Visitors holding visas or authorized to live, work, or study in the U.K. do not need an ETA.

How to Apply for an ETA

Travelers can apply for an ETA online through the U.K.’s mobile app, available for Android and iPhone. The application costs approximately $12.50, payable by credit card. Once approved, the ETA is valid for two years and allows visits of up to six months per trip.

Applicants must upload a photograph of their passport and a personal photo as part of the process. Decisions are typically emailed within three days of submission.

Who Needs an ETA?

All travelers eligible for the ETA must apply, including infants and children. Those transiting through a U.K. airport to another destination are also required to have an ETA.

Key Takeaways

  • The ETA is a mandatory travel pre-authorization for visitors from visa-exempt countries.
  • The application fee is about $12.50, and approval is generally granted within three days.
  • Travelers need an ETA for both direct visits and transit through the U.K., regardless of age.

Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and apply for their ETA well in advance of travel to ensure a smooth entry process into the U.K.
