Mindy, you’ve made a significant impact in Urbandale since moving here. What initially drew you to this community?
I was drawn to Urbandale for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and the vibrant opportunities it offered for growth, both professionally and personally. The community’s commitment to support and uplift each other was something I wanted to be a part of. It felt like the perfect place to put down roots and grow my career in marketing and event planning.
With a successful career in marketing and event planning, what would you say is the key to creating a successful community event?
The key is truly understanding the community’s needs and interests. I spend a lot of time listening to what people are excited about and what they feel could be improved. From there, it’s all about creating meaningful connections and providing engaging, accessible experiences that resonate with the community. Success comes from seeing smiles, hearing laughter, and watching the community come together as one.
Can you share more about your creative hobbies and how they play a role in your professional life?
Absolutely! My creative hobbies, like crafting and making jewelry, are not just a source of relaxation and joy for me; they also fuel my professional creativity. Running DIY workshops and participating in craft fairs has given me a deeper connection with the community and enhanced my event planning by incorporating these personal passions into community projects and events. It’s a wonderful synergy that keeps my work fresh and exciting.
How did your upbringing influence your decision to focus on community work and volunteerism?
Growing up in a small Midwestern town, I saw firsthand how community support can lift people up during tough times. My family was always involved in community service, and those experiences instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility to give back. This upbringing shaped my commitment to fostering community ties and helping wherever I can, especially through initiatives like the school supply drive.
Tell us about the initiative to provide school supplies to underprivileged children. How did this project come about?
This initiative started from a conversation with a local teacher who shared how many students in our area lacked basic school supplies. That conversation sparked a desire to help bridge that gap. We started small, with just a few volunteers, and it has grown into a community-wide effort. Seeing the children’s faces light up with their new supplies each year is incredibly rewarding and motivates us to keep expanding our reach.
You’re an avid gardener. How does gardening influence your mental well-being and your creativity?
Gardening is a therapeutic activity for me. It’s a time when I can be alone with my thoughts, reflect on my day, and literally put down roots. The cycle of growth in the garden mirrors creative and personal growth, providing a constant source of inspiration and renewal. Plus, sharing my harvest with neighbors fosters a sense of community and connection.
With your passion for art and teaching, what would your dream studio look like, and what classes would you offer?
My dream studio would be a welcoming, light-filled space where people of all ages can come together to create and share their stories. I envision offering a variety of classes, from painting and jewelry making to pottery and scrapbooking. It would be a place not just for learning new skills but also for community members to connect and inspire each other, blending art with social interaction.
Can you describe a particularly memorable moment from your volunteer work?
One of my most memorable moments was during a charity drive last winter. We were distributing warm clothes and hot meals to those in need, and I met a young mother who shared her struggles and how much the community’s support meant to her. We ended up talking for a long time, and her story reminded me of why I do what I do. It was a poignant reminder of the impact our efforts can have on individual lives.
Your rescue dog seems to be a big part of your life. How has Bailey influenced your perspective on community and care?
Bailey has been a wonderful addition to my life, teaching me even more about patience, unconditional love, and the joys of simple moments. Walking with him around the neighborhood has led to countless interactions with my neighbors, helping me connect with the community on a more personal level. He’s my sidekick in community building!
Looking forward, what are some challenges and opportunities you anticipate facing in your community work?
As Urbandale continues to grow, keeping the tight-knit community feel while expanding our services will be a challenge. However, I see tremendous opportunities in leveraging new technologies and social media to enhance our outreach and engage more community members. My goal is to ensure that as we grow, no one feels left out and that everyone can contribute to and benefit from our community’s evolution.
