Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Announces Leadership Transition for 2025
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has announced significant executive appointments and board member nominations, marking a pivotal leadership transition. Effective April 1, 2025, current Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Eisaku Ito will assume the roles of President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), succeeding Seiji Izumisawa, who will transition to Chairman of the Board after six years as MHI’s top executive. The changes were approved at a Board of Directors meeting held in Tokyo and will be formally proposed during MHI’s 100th Ordinary General Meeting of Shareholders scheduled for June 27, 2025.
Eisaku Ito: A Visionary Successor
Mr. Ito brings over 30 years of experience at MHI to his new role, having served as Executive Vice President, CTO, and Head of the Technology Strategy Office since April 2020. During his tenure, he spearheaded advancements in technology and business processes, expanded MHI’s digital innovation capabilities, and promoted the development of AI-driven solutions. Under his leadership, MHI aims to further strengthen its position as a leading manufacturing and technology company in Japan by focusing on growth and innovation across its diverse business portfolio.
Seiji Izumisawa’s Transformative Leadership
Mr. Izumisawa’s presidency has been marked by significant milestones, including restructuring the thermal power business, discontinuing the SpaceJet program, and divesting the machine tools segment. These strategic moves, combined with record-breaking performance in fiscal year 2023 under the 2021 Medium-Term Business Plan, have enhanced MHI’s profitability and set the stage for future growth. He has also emphasized advancing the Energy Transition and other societal challenges as key components of the company’s strategy.

Reflecting on the transition, Mr. Izumisawa underscored the need for a leader with extensive technical and business expertise to navigate challenges such as carbon neutrality and national security. He expressed confidence in Mr. Ito’s ability to lead the company’s core businesses, including gas turbines and nuclear power while commercializing growth areas to ensure MHI’s continued success.
Mr. Ito, acknowledging the foundations laid by Mr. Izumisawa, highlighted the company’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, with record-high revenues and profits. He emphasized his commitment to building a robust business structure, enhancing talent development, and advancing MHI’s digitalization and automation efforts. He reiterated MHI’s dedication to addressing long-term societal challenges, including achieving carbon neutrality through its MISSION NET ZERO initiative, while optimizing its business portfolio and executing growth strategies.
