eBay Expands Klarna’s Buy Now, Pay Later Options Across Europe

eBay has expanded Klarna’s buy now, pay later (BNPL) payment options to six additional European countries following a successful launch in Germany. Shoppers in Austria, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom can now access these flexible payment methods, according to a joint press release issued on Thursday, December 12.

Avritti Khandurie Mittal, eBay’s vice president and general manager of global payments and financial services, highlighted the importance of offering customers diverse payment options. She noted that Klarna’s BNPL services give eBay shoppers the ability to pay over time by selecting options that best suit their needs at checkout. Depending on their location, customers can choose from Klarna’s interest-free Pay in 3, Pay in 30 Days, or Financing plans with monthly repayments for larger purchases.

The companies also announced that Klarna users can now resell items purchased on eBay through Klarna’s app. This feature simplifies the resale process by automatically populating listing details and images, streamlining the experience for users.

David Sykes, Klarna’s Chief Commercial Officer, expressed excitement about the partnership with eBay. He emphasized that the collaboration not only provides shoppers with more flexible payment options but also introduces a new resale feature that allows customers to buy and sell items with greater ease. Sykes described eBay as one of the world’s leading marketplaces and noted the potential to enhance the buying and selling experience for millions of users.

This expansion marks the next phase of a collaboration that began in March 2022, when Klarna’s BNPL options were introduced to eBay’s German platform. At that time, the companies added services like Pay Later and Financing to complement existing payment methods such as Klarna’s Pay Now.

The PYMNTS Intelligence report, New Data: Defining the New Buy Now, Pay Later Consumer, reveals that BNPL services are particularly popular among younger generations. Nearly 50% of Generation Z and millennial consumers have used BNPL options within the past year, demonstrating strong demand for flexible payment solutions in this demographic.
