Interview with Neville Voss: Scaling Solar Teams and Keeping it Sustainable

You’ve done a lot in renewable energy. Why focus on scaling solar installation teams?

Glad to be here. Scaling solar teams is about meeting the growing demand for clean energy. The world needs more renewable energy fast, but quality can’t take a backseat. Building big teams while keeping the work top-notch is the challenge I love solving.

What’s the hardest part of building big solar teams?

Honestly, it’s finding the right people. You need a mix of skills, passion, and adaptability. We’re not just putting panels on roofs; we’re shaping the future of energy. That takes commitment, and not everyone’s ready for it.

How do you balance speed and quality when scaling operations?

Technology is the secret sauce. We use tools like AI to check quality in real time. Processes like these help us move fast without cutting corners. At the same time, we train teams to work smarter, not just harder.

You talk a lot about customer focus. Why is that so important?

Customers are at the heart of everything. They’re the ones making the switch to solar, and we need to make it seamless for them. Good communication and understanding their needs make all the difference.

What role does technology play in your work?

It’s huge. We use software to track progress, AI for quality control, and IoT to monitor installations. Tech helps us stay efficient and consistent, which is key when you’re scaling up.

How does sustainability fit into all this?

Sustainability is the big picture. Scaling solar isn’t just about hitting business goals; it’s about helping the planet. Every panel we install takes us closer to cutting carbon emissions and building a greener future.

How do you train your teams to be so effective?

Training is everything. We focus on both technical skills and mindset. It’s not just about knowing the job; it’s about being ready for change. Mentorship also plays a big role in building confidence and leadership.

You’ve mentioned mentorship as a big part of building teams. Why is that so important?

Mentorship is how you build leaders, not just workers. When experienced team members guide others, it creates a ripple effect. It’s about passing down knowledge and building confidence. Strong leaders can handle challenges and keep the team moving forward.

What role does customer feedback play in improving your work?

Customer feedback is gold. It shows us what we’re doing right and where we can improve. Listening to customers helps us fine-tune our processes and deliver better service. It’s also how we build trust and long-term relationships.

If you could change one thing about the renewable energy industry, what would it be?

I’d make it more accessible. Renewable energy should be affordable for everyone, not just a luxury. Scaling up operations helps drive costs down, but we still have a way to go. Making clean energy the default choice for all is the ultimate goal.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in your career?

Never underestimate the power of a strong team. You can have the best ideas, but without the right people to execute them, it’s just talk. Invest in people, and they’ll take your vision further than you imagined.

What’s next for you and your work?

I want to scale even bigger and faster while keeping everything customer-focused and sustainable. Technology will keep playing a big role, and I’m excited about where AI and automation can take us.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in renewable energy?

Keep it simple. Focus on learning, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The industry is growing fast, and there’s room for people who care and want to make a difference.
