He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and a Master’s degree in Nonprofit Management from Gratz College. Professionally, Gon Erez has played pivotal roles in transforming nonprofit operations through strategic planning and the integration of business efficiencies. His experience includes significant positions such as Program Director at the Youngstown JCC and Chief Program Officer at the JCC of Greater Buffalo. As a freelance consultant, Gon specializes in guiding nonprofit organizations to optimize their operations and increase their impact.

In his leisure time, Gon is an avid outdoorsman, enjoying activities like snowboarding, hiking, and sailing, which reflect his commitment to maintaining a balanced lifestyle. His professional journey and personal interests underscore his dedication to service and community engagement.

Gon, what initially drew you to the field of nonprofit management?

My interest in nonprofit management sparked during my time in the IDF. I saw the impact of structured, mission-driven efforts on community welfare and human rights. The desire to translate these efforts into sustainable practices that can thrive outside a military context led me to pursue a career where I could meld my skills in psychology and economics with my passion for social impact.

How have your experiences in Israel shaped your approach to nonprofit work in the U.S.?

Israel is a place where resilience and innovation are part of everyday life. This mindset influenced my approach to nonprofit management, especially in terms of adapting quickly to challenges and thinking creatively to solve problems. The cultural emphasis on community and mutual support in Israel has also guided my focus on community-centric nonprofit strategies in the U.S.

Can you share a specific project or initiative that you feel embodies your approach to nonprofit management?

Certainly! At the JCC of Greater Buffalo, I led a project that integrated digital tools to improve engagement and streamline donor management. By using data analytics, we could better understand donor behaviors and preferences, which allowed us to personalize our outreach and significantly increase our funding. This project not only boosted our efficiency but also deepened our engagement with the community we serve.

What challenges do nonprofits typically face when trying to adopt more business-like efficiency?

One of the biggest challenges is the cultural shift required. Nonprofits are often mission-driven, and the idea of adopting business practices can sometimes be seen as a departure from their core values. There’s also a practical aspect of training and resource allocation, which can be daunting for organizations that operate with limited budgets and staff.

In your experience, what are some effective strategies for overcoming these challenges?

Education and transparency are key. It’s crucial to communicate how business strategies can enhance, not detract from, the mission. Implementing small, incremental changes rather than large-scale transformations can help ease the transition. Additionally, leveraging technology to automate administrative tasks can free up valuable resources to focus more on mission-centric activities.

How do you stay current with trends and advancements that could benefit your consultancy and your clients?

I make a concerted effort to continue learning, whether through formal education, like my current MSW program, or informal learning, such as webinars and industry networking events. I also participate in various think tanks and forums that focus on innovation in nonprofit and business sectors.

What do you think is the next big trend in nonprofit management?

Integration of advanced technologies like AI and machine learning to personalize donor engagements and predict fundraising trends is on the rise. These technologies can dramatically improve how nonprofits interact with their stakeholders and optimize their operations.

Reflecting on your career, what’s one piece of advice you would give to someone starting in nonprofit management?

Start with passion, but also develop a thick skin. The nonprofit sector can be immensely rewarding, but it’s also challenging. Being able to navigate the emotional landscape of nonprofit work while keeping your eyes on strategic goals is crucial for long-term success.

How do you balance your personal life with your demanding career?

It’s all about setting boundaries and prioritizing time. I make sure to carve out time for outdoor activities, which help me recharge. Also, staying organized and planning ahead allows me to maximize my productivity during work hours, so I can truly unwind when I’m off the clock.

Looking ahead, what are some goals you aim to achieve in the next five years?

Professionally, I’d like to expand my consultancy to offer more specialized services, particularly focusing on technology integration for nonprofits. Personally, I’m aiming to complete my MSW and perhaps even start a PhD. I believe continuous education not only fuels my professional growth but also deeply enriches my personal insights and satisfaction.
