Global Billionaire Wealth Reaches New Heights With Tech Industry Leading the Pack
Billionaires around the world are wealthier and more numerous than ever, with their collective fortunes reaching unprecedented levels. The 2023 Billionaire Census by Altrata revealed that the global population of billionaires increased by 4% to a total of 3,323, while their combined net worth jumped by 9% to a record-breaking $12.1 trillion.
This surge in wealth concentration underscores the widening economic gap, even among the ultra-rich. An exclusive group of just 18 billionaires, each possessing fortunes exceeding $50 billion, now controls almost $2 trillion—accounting for 16% of all billionaire wealth. This figure marks a fourfold rise in their share of global wealth compared to a decade ago, indicating the rapid accumulation of riches at the highest levels.
Tech Industry and North America Drive Billionaire Growth
North America continues to be the epicenter of billionaire wealth, with the region’s billionaire population increasing by 9.9% to 1,111 individuals. Collective wealth in North America surged by 15.7%, exceeding $5 trillion, largely due to robust stock market gains and the soaring value of mega-cap technology stocks. Leading figures in this sector, including Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, significantly benefited from bullish markets and investor enthusiasm for technological innovation.
Despite this rise, the distribution of billionaire wealth remains skewed. A majority of billionaires—84%—hold fortunes between $1 billion and $5 billion, making up 42% of the total wealth in this category. In stark contrast, a smaller group of 194 billionaires, each with assets valued at $10 billion or more, holds 41% of global billionaire wealth, amounting to $5 trillion.
Maya Imberg, Altrata’s head of thought leadership, noted that billionaire wealth continues to hit record highs year after year. She attributed this trend to compounding investment returns during periods of economic expansion, even in the face of inflation and geopolitical uncertainties.
India’s Rapid Billionaire Growth and China’s Decline
India experienced the fastest growth in billionaire numbers in 2023, with a 16% increase bringing the total to 131. Their combined wealth now stands at $395 billion, positioning India as the fourth-largest country in terms of billionaire wealth, following the United States, China, and Germany.
Meanwhile, China’s billionaire count decreased by 15%, dropping to 304 individuals, with their total wealth falling to $1.2 trillion. Altrata linked this decline to a slowing Chinese economy and underperforming stock markets, reflecting broader macroeconomic challenges.
Female Billionaires and Their Investment Trends
Women now make up 13% of the global billionaire population, numbering 431 in total. Among them, 38% inherited their wealth, including notable figures like Alice Walton, the Walmart heir, and Françoise Bettencourt Meyers, L’Oréal’s heiress and the world’s richest woman.
Female billionaires are notably more likely than their male peers to invest in luxury real estate and fine art, being 1.5 times more likely to own high-end properties and 1.3 times more likely to collect art. Their investment portfolios often contain a larger share of private holdings, frequently connected to long-standing family businesses. Self-made female billionaires are primarily active in financial services and technology, while philanthropy and finance are popular areas of focus for female billionaires in general.
