India Launches Operation Sadbhav to Aid Southeast Asian Countries Hit by Typhoon Yagi
On September 15, India initiated Operation Sadbhav, a humanitarian mission to provide disaster relief to Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam, all of which have been severely affected by Typhoon Yagi and subsequent flooding. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that India has committed $1 million in flood relief to Vietnam and an additional $100,000 to Laos.
In response to this commitment, the Indian Navy and Air Force quickly mobilized ships and aircraft to deliver aid to the affected countries. On September 15, the Indian Navy’s INS Satpura departed for Myanmar, carrying 10 tonnes of essential supplies, including dry rations, clothing, and medicines.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is also actively involved, transporting 35 tonnes of relief materials to Vietnam. The shipment includes water purification items, water containers, blankets, kitchen utensils, and solar lanterns. Additionally, 10 tonnes of aid, including a generator, water purification items, hygiene supplies, mosquito nets, blankets, and sleeping bags, are being sent to Laos.
Typhoon Yagi, which made landfall in Vietnam on September 7, is regarded as one of the strongest storms to hit Asia in recent years. As of September 15, Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that the typhoon, combined with heavy rainfall, flooding, and landslides, resulted in 292 deaths, with 38 people still missing. The storm has also caused widespread damage, destroying over 230,000 homes and affecting more than 190,000 hectares of rice fields, 48,000 hectares of other crops, and 32,000 hectares of fruit trees. Additionally, more than 2.6 million poultry and livestock have been lost.
