Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey to Receive Yale Leadership Award
James Quincey, Chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company, is set to receive the prestigious Yale Legend in Leadership Award during the Yale CEO Caucus in Washington, D.C., on September 18. The award, decided by a unanimous vote from Yale representatives and previous honorees, will be presented by notable figures, including General Motors CEO Mary Barra, Motorola Solutions CEO Greg Brown, Lazard Freres & Co. CEO Peter Orszag, and former PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi.
The Yale Legend in Leadership Award, established 35 years ago, recognizes current and former CEOs who serve as exemplars of leadership, inspiring chief executives across industries, sectors, and nations.
Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, senior associate dean for leadership studies at the Yale School of Management and the event’s organizer, noted that Quincey had inherited a monumental legacy with Coca-Cola, one of the world’s most recognized brands. Sonnenfeld remarked that Quincey’s leadership reflects the values and sustained success the award was designed to honor, adding that his leadership of Coca-Cola stands out even among the company’s long line of iconic leaders. Sonnenfeld further highlighted that under Quincey’s leadership since 2017, Coca-Cola’s stock has soared to near-record highs, outperforming competitors while increasing revenues and improving margins.
Sonnenfeld emphasized that Quincey’s approach to success has been as significant as the results themselves. Rather than relying on Coca-Cola’s brand equity, Quincey introduced a strategy to diversify the company’s portfolio, positioning it as a “total beverage company” and moving beyond its soda-dominant history. He made bold moves, including discontinuing around 200 underperforming brands, roughly 50% of Coca-Cola’s portfolio at the time, and driving strong growth in products like Coca-Cola Zero Sugar. By 2022, low- and no-sugar offerings accounted for 29% of the company’s total volume.
Additionally, Quincey built on Coca-Cola’s strong tradition of social responsibility, particularly in the areas of sustainability and community engagement. By 2023, the company was returning 148% of the water used in its beverages to nature and communities. In 2022, Coca-Cola exceeded its annual philanthropic goal by donating 1.4% of its operating income to The Coca-Cola Foundation, contributing to local communities worldwide.
Sonnenfeld described Quincey as one of the most respected CEOs today, embodying the balance of doing good while achieving business success.
James Quincey’s association with Coca-Cola began in 1996 when he joined as director of learning strategy for the Latin America group. He rose through the ranks, taking on numerous leadership roles around the world. Before becoming CEO in 2017 and chairman of the board in 2019, Quincey served as president and chief operating officer from 2015 to 2017. He was also president of the company’s Europe group from 2013 to 2015, where he expanded Coca-Cola’s brand portfolio and enhanced its market share. Quincey played a crucial role in the formation of Coca-Cola European Partners, one of the largest independent Coca-Cola bottlers globally.
Quincey’s earlier leadership experiences include serving as president of Coca-Cola’s Northwest Europe and Nordics unit from 2008 to 2012, where he led the acquisition of Innocent Drinks. He also held the position of president of the Mexico division from 2005 to 2008, overseeing the acquisition of Jugos del Valle. His international career with Coca-Cola began after his time as a strategy consultant with The Kalchas Group, a spinoff of Bain & Company and McKinsey & Company.
Quincey holds a bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering from the University of Liverpool and is fluent in both English and Spanish. He currently serves as a director of Pfizer and is a member of the Consumer Goods Forum and the New York Stock Exchange Board Advisory Council.
