Group M Restructures: EssenceMediacom X Phased Out Amid Leadership Changes
Group M has decided to discontinue EssenceMediacom X less than two years after its launch, merging it into the broader EssenceMediacom communications brand. This move aligns with the company’s strategy to streamline operations and unify its structure across all Group M agencies.
As part of this restructuring, Clare Chapman, who was appointed CEO of EssenceMediacom by parent company WPP just a year ago, is leaving the business. EssenceMediacom X was originally established in 2022 to prevent conflicts of interest following the merger of MediaCom and Essence. However, the agency is now being integrated into the larger EssenceMediacom brand to align with a global operating model and simplify operations, especially after the recent loss of several key clients, including Sainsbury’s and Sky, which diminished the need for EssenceMediacom X.
In the wake of these changes, Natalie Cummins will join from competitor Publicis agency Zenith to become the new CEO of EssenceMediacom. Meanwhile, Kate Rowlinson will be promoted to the role of GroupM’s UK CEO. Cummins expressed her admiration for EssenceMediacom, emphasizing its reputation not only as the largest agency but also, in her view, the best. She praised the agency’s “Breakthrough” positioning, describing it as the ideal catalyst to propel the brand to new heights.
Rowlinson, who has been leading the agency for five years and oversaw its transition from MediaCom to EssenceMediacom after the merger finalized in January of the previous year, will now move into a leadership role within GroupM. Her promotion follows Josh Krichefski’s decision to focus exclusively on his EMEA responsibilities, allowing for greater attention on the UK market. Both Cummins and Rowlinson will assume their new roles on November 1.
Josh Lawson, Global CEO, commented on the restructuring, highlighting that unifying the UK operations is a significant step forward. He also emphasized that bringing Cummins on board is vital, noting her respect within the industry, her leadership qualities, and her cultural alignment with Group M’s goals to achieve more breakthroughs for their clients.
