MTN Group Announces Key Executive Changes

MTN Group has announced significant leadership appointments and departures. Mohammed Rufai has been named the new CEO of MTN Congo-Brazzaville, starting on September 1, 2024. Ayham Moussa will take on the role of COO at MTN Nigeria, effective August 19, 2024. In addition to these appointments, MTN disclosed the voluntary early retirement of Djibril Ouattara, CEO of MTN Côte d’Ivoire, and the departure of Hassan Jabber, COO of MTN Nigeria.

Mohammed Rufai brings over 24 years of ICT experience and a proven track record in the telecommunications sector. His journey with MTN began in 2002 at MTN Nigeria, followed by his move to MTN Ghana, where he became Chief Technical Officer in 2015. Currently serving as Chief Technical Officer at MTN Nigeria, Rufai has also held senior roles within the MTN Group, including Regional CTIO for Southeast Africa and Ghana. He serves on the boards of Bayobab (Nigeria) and MTN Benin. Known for his leadership in execution excellence, people development, and customer experience, Rufai holds a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science and advanced management certifications from Lagos Business School, Cranfield University, and the University of Cambridge.

MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita acknowledged Djibril Ouattara’s contributions to the growth and turnaround of MTN Côte d’Ivoire and thanked Hassan Jabber for his 22 years of dedicated service in various key markets, including Sudan, Guinea-Conakry, and Afghanistan. Mupita extended his best wishes to both departing executives and congratulated Ayham Moussa and Mohammed Rufai on their new roles, expressing confidence in their future success.

Ayham Moussa will step into the COO role at MTN Nigeria, replacing Hassan Jabber. Moussa, who first joined MTN in 2002 and returned in 2006 after a brief hiatus, has served in various capacities across multiple markets, including Syria and Guinea-Conakry. His leadership roles have included Chief Information Officer, Chief Technical and Information Officer, and CEO of MTN Congo-Brazzaville. During his tenure in Congo-Brazzaville, Moussa was instrumental in advancing the country’s digital infrastructure from 2G to 4G, earning recognition for having the best network in West and Central Africa. His leadership as CEO saw significant growth and operational excellence at MTN Congo, bolstered by strong local stakeholder relationships.
