Dating has increasingly become a digital experience as individuals rely on technology to broaden their social spheres. A recent survey showed that nearly 45 percent of people use online dating apps, surpassing more traditional avenues for meeting people, such as social activities, work, and recommendations.

However, dating apps are doing more than just tallying daily usage and providing a source of diversion for end users. They are creating meaningful connections between people with a high success rate. Seventy percent of people who meet someone on a dating app have gone on to experience a romantic relationship, showing that the matches taking place can have a lasting impact on people’s lives.

Match Group CEO Bernard Kim underscores the imperative that dating apps help create connections. Kim continues to guide the company as it looks to further diversify online dating options for users through the responsible, safe use of technology. Match Group, which operates a portfolio including Tinder, Hinge, and Match.com, is leading the drive to leverage online and mobile platforms to help people meet one another in a digital environment while cultivating lasting real-world connections.

These online dating apps do more than make it easier for people to find matches from the comfort of their home. Online dating environments add flexibility and reduce intimidation factors that can leave many singles reluctant to begin looking for their special someone. While most digital apps are generally designed to increase usage time, dating apps uniquely expedite use and generate connections, helping users offboard from the app with a positive outcome. This can help users reduce the time and costs that traditional dating can incur and often waste over time.

The benefits carry on beyond convenience. There are fewer limitations to getting started compared to traditional dating, and the variety of platforms available gives users different openings for meeting people. Online dating can also offer comfort to users who are hesitant to meet complete strangers, providing a secure space for people to get to know each other before choosing to share contact information or meet one-on-one. Dating apps can also open doors for people who are shy or afraid of rejection by providing easier barriers to entry and a level of privacy they can control from the start.

Given these advantages, app usage has become an essential component of the dating scene for various user demographics. Match Group CEO Kim noted in a recent article that dating apps have become an especially critical part of dating for members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Over 60 percent of these couples meet online as the technology helps break down barriers and provide safe, inclusive spaces to meet new people. In addition, 61 percent of these users report having positive experiences, and 24 percent of partnered LGBTQIA+ adults have met their match through online dating.

Kim credits dating app users’ success to these platforms’ ability to “provide opportunities to significantly expand beyond an immediate social circle and engage with individuals you may never have crossed paths with otherwise.” Not only does online dating open up geographical boundaries, even on a smaller scale, but ever-evolving algorithms can present potential matches that correspond with description keywords, interests, and personal user behavior patterns. The result can be more precise matching, presenting targeted choices that are more likely to align with user values.

While only some connections will lead to a lasting relationship, dating apps can improve the chances that a user will be presented with options for potential matches that represent their needs. Increasingly, younger daters are taking advantage of online dating as a way to meet new people, with 55 percent of daily platform users representing Gen Z. Though these digital-savvy users may also be first to take to social media to share their online dating stories, for better or for worse, Match Group CEO Kim underscores that dating apps have been proven to work and that evolving technology stands to help make even more precise and inventive matches for people moving forward.
