The Mars Family is America’s Second Richest Family and a Candy and Pet Food Empire

The Mars family, including siblings Jacqueline and John Mars, along with the four daughters of their late brother Forrest Jr., are the owners of Mars Inc., a global powerhouse in the candy and pet food industries. With an impressive revenue of $47 billion in 2022, Mars Inc. boasts a portfolio of iconic brands such as M&Ms, Snickers, Ben’s Original Rice, and Pedigree dog food.

The company’s roots trace back to 1911 when Frank Mars pioneered the sale of buttercream candy from his kitchen in Tacoma, Washington. Since then, the Mars family has continued to shape the company’s trajectory. Forrest Sr., Frank’s son, joined the business in 1929, playing a pivotal role in developing the malt-flavored nougat that would later become the foundation of Milky Way.

Over the years, Mars Inc. has expanded its reach and diversified its offerings. In 2017, the company made a significant move by acquiring animal hospital company VCA for $9 billion, bolstering its presence in the pet care sector.

Despite its vast size and global presence, Mars Inc. remains a family affair. Several family members are actively involved in the company’s operations, with some serving on the board of directors. Notably, Jacqueline’s son, Stephen Badger, and Forrest Jr.’s daughter, Victoria, contribute to the company’s governance.

From its humble beginnings to its status as a Fortune 500 company, Mars Inc. stands as a testament to the Mars family’s entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence in the candy and pet food industries.
