Andrew Irvine Succeeds Ross McEwan as NAB CEO

The NAB Board of Directors has made public the selection of Andrew Irvine as Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director. Mr. Irvine, who has served as NAB’s Group Executive Business and Private Banking since 2020, will assume his new role on April 2, 2024, succeeding Ross McEwan CBE, who will retire from executive positions following a distinguished career in financial and insurance services.

Mr. Irvine will also assume the role of Australian Banking Association Chair from Mr. McEwan on behalf of NAB, which accepted Chair bank responsibilities for two years from December 2023. A new Group Executive Business and Private Banking will be appointed in due course.

Mr. Irvine’s previous role was as Head of Canadian Business Banking at the Bank of Montreal (BMO), Canada’s oldest bank and one of its largest financial institutions, where he held various positions over a span of more than 12 years. Prior to BMO, he held positions at McKinsey & Company, Lycos Europe, and Credit Agricole.

Philip Chronican, NAB Chair, emphasized Mr. Irvine’s suitability for the position, citing his dedication to customer service, accomplishments in leading Australia’s largest business bank franchise, effective people management, adeptness in risk management, and international experience.

Mr. Irvine responded, expressing humility at the Board’s decision and excitement for the opportunity to lead NAB, a bank that plays a central role in the financial lives of many Australians and New Zealanders. He acknowledged the valuable lessons learned from Mr. McEwan during his tenure as CEO and affirmed his commitment to continuing NAB’s strategic ambitions to benefit customers, colleagues, and shareholders alike.

In tribute to Mr. McEwan, Chronican praised his leadership over the past four-plus years and his focus on improving performance, simplification, and surpassing customer expectations. Mr. McEwan expressed confidence in leaving NAB’s customers in capable hands with Mr. Irvine and the team.

As a British-Canadian dual citizen, Mr. Irvine holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Business Management and Commerce from King’s College London and a Master of Business Administration from Western University in Ontario, Canada.
