Africa’s Wealthiest Man Aliko Dangote is the Owner of the New Refinery
Africa’s largest oil refinery has initiated its production, marking the end of a prolonged anticipation for a facility that could enhance the refining capabilities of a region heavily dependent on imported petroleum goods.
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery company, announcing the commencement of operations, disclosed that the $19 billion facility, boasting a daily production capacity of 650,000 barrels, has started generating diesel and aviation fuel. The refinery has received approximately 6 million barrels of crude from Nigeria’s state oil firm, NNPC Limited.
Owned by Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest individual and a Nigerian industrialist, the private refinery is situated on the outskirts of Lagos, the economic hub of Nigeria, coexisting with a fertilizer plant. Billed as the world’s most extensive single-train refinery by the company, the facility is anticipated to meet the entirety of Nigeria’s gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and aviation jet fuel requirements at full operational capacity. Furthermore, the company envisions that at least 40% of the oil products manufactured will be available for export.
Although Nigeria stands among Africa’s leading oil producers, it paradoxically relies on importing refined petroleum products for domestic consumption. However, the project is touted as a transformative force for the nation.
