Julie Timm Departs Unexpectedly from Sound Transit

Julie Timm, the CEO of Sound Transit, will depart from her role on January 12, marking an unexpected exit merely 16 months after assuming leadership in September 2022. Sound Transit faces various challenges, including cost overruns, delays in selecting station locations for future light rail expansions, and concerns about system capacity and crowding issues during expansion.

According to Sound Transit spokesperson John Gallagher, a transition team comprising board and staff leadership will guide the agency through this leadership change. An interim CEO is expected to be appointed by the board in the upcoming weeks.

In an email to Sound Transit staff, Timm attributed her departure to personal matters, expressing her decision as a necessary step to focus more on her family. She highlighted the difficulty of maintaining the required level of dedication and stability while splitting her focus amidst the agency’s historic phase of openings and new construction.

Timm’s tenure saw initiatives focused on enhancing passenger experience, including minor yet impactful changes like train cleanliness improvements. However, broader projects aimed at improving rider experience, such as the delayed Passenger Information Management System, have remained problematic.

During her leadership, Timm emphasized deliberate decision-making for the system’s future use. Nevertheless, the balancing act with the Sound Transit board, consisting of members with varied interests and priorities, including transit investments and equity issues, posed challenges.

The CEO search for a long-term replacement is slated to commence in early 2024, with an interim CEO taking charge. The agency faces critical light rail expansions in 2024, adding pressure to maintain stability during this transition.
