Alicia Barton Assumes the Position of CEO at Vineyard Offshore
A former state regulator and executive within the power industry, Alicia Barton, is poised to assume the position of CEO at Vineyard Offshore, a prominent wind development company in the United States. Barton will succeed Lars Pedersen, a Danish executive who played a significant role in steering the Vineyard Wind project, the first major offshore wind venture in the country, towards its current development stage. Set in the Atlantic Ocean south of Martha’s Vineyard, the 800-megawatt project is on track for completion next year.
As the former CEO of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, Barton oversaw the establishment of a pivotal staging port in New Bedford, Massachusetts, which now plays a crucial role in the construction of Vineyard Wind. Later, in her role at the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, she was instrumental in setting ambitious goals for procuring significant amounts of offshore wind-generated electricity to align with the state’s climate objectives.
Assuming her new role amidst challenges such as escalating interest rates, supply chain constraints, and mounting construction expenses, Barton expressed both awareness of the hurdles and confidence in Vineyard Offshore’s potential as a frontrunner in the North American offshore wind market.
Barton’s immediate task involves overseeing sustained expansion, prompting industry observers to monitor potential bids by the company for power contracts in New England. Additionally, with a lease off the Californian coast, Vineyard Offshore aims to secure agreements for power distribution in that region.
To achieve further growth, Barton emphasized replicating the collaborative model established with Vineyard Wind by working closely with state partners. Her predecessor, Pedersen, departs Vineyard Offshore to lead global development at Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, following a transformative eight-year tenure during which the company significantly expanded its U.S. presence, acquiring leases off the coasts of New England, New York, and California.
Recognizing Barton’s alignment with these crucial areas, Pedersen highlighted her seasoned experience and resilience within the offshore wind sector. With previous roles at FirstLight Power, focusing on transitioning a power company towards building new facilities, and leadership in New York’s planning process for offshore wind integration, Barton’s influence on climate goals in both Massachusetts and New York has been noteworthy.
