Mark Newman Named UK CEO of Canopius Group

Businessman with golden key

Canopius Group has recently appointed Mark Newman as the Chief Executive Officer for the UK. This move follows the decision of the interim UK CEO, Kate Roy, to step down from her position on December 31st, 2023. Kate Roy will continue in her role as the Group Chief Operating Officer (COO).

Mark Newman, currently the CEO of the Asia Pacific region (APAC), is set to assume his new role starting January 1st, 2024. The transition marks Newman’s shift from leading Canopius’ APAC operations.

In conjunction with his new responsibilities, Newman will become a member of the Board of Directors of Canopius Managing Agents (CMA), subject to approval by the UK’s Prudential Regulation Authority.

As Canopius actively considers internal and external candidates for the APAC CEO role, Newman will provide ongoing support to ensure a seamless leadership transition in the region.

Mark Newman has been with Canopius for seven years, initially joining as APAC CEO in 2016 and later becoming a member of the Global Leadership Team in 2021. Newman has served as a Board Member for Canopius Asia Pte. Ltd (CAPL) and held the role of Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) approved Principal Officer since 2016.

During his tenure as the head of Canopius APAC, the unit experienced a five-fold increase in revenue, exceeding all key performance indicators in its strategic plan. This solidified its position as the largest Lloyd’s Managing Agent in the region, according to Canopius.

Mark Newman’s career spans three decades, with 20 years at the chief executive level. He served as CEO of Guy Carpenter Fac Asia Pacific in 2000, followed by the role of CEO APAC at Catlin in 2008. Between 2015 and 2016, he held the positions of Head of Asia and Deputy CEO of Asia at XL Catlin, based in Singapore.

Additionally, Newman has held the position of Elected Member and Group Chair of the Asia Pacific Market Group (APMG) since 2019. He was re-elected in 2022 for his second three-year term to represent the interests of Lloyd’s managing agents in the region.

Mark Newman expressed his excitement about the new role, emphasizing the importance of teamwork. He acknowledged the success of the APAC team and looks forward to collaborating with colleagues in the UK to elevate Canopius to new heights.

Neil Robertson, CEO of Canopius Group, expressed enthusiasm about Mark Newman taking over the leadership of the UK business. Robertson praised Newman’s successful leadership in evolving the APAC operations, surpassing the five-year growth plan for the Singapore and Australia businesses. Robertson is confident that Newman, with his proven track record, will contribute to the execution of growth plans for the UK teams.
