4 Myths About Personalities That Have To Be Reconsidered

  1. The way we have learned to think has implemented in us particular mindsets out of which we cannot think. There are myths about the personalities of the individuals around us. The behavior they develop is based on their role in each moment. Today, we put under the microscope all the labels that society attempts to put on us without considering that people are not so different after all.

    You can either be a good speaker or a good listener
    Are listeners the best, or what? It is a common mistake that listeners are hardly ever smooth talkers. The fact that the words ”listen” and ”silent” are spelled with the same letters perhaps seems to increase this confusion. While we need to be silent in order to listen to the other person, that does not imply that we will not be able to reply in a structured, organized, and most importantly helpful way. Of course, this is a reality in some cases, but let us not forget that people are not black and white. The way we act has to do with other people as well as the situations that we have to be a part of each time. So, do not be surprised if you find someone you know in the company of other people having a completely different attitude when it comes to communication; it is simply a part of the deal.

    Givers and takers, pick a side
    Again another stereotype that wants us to put labels on people and divide them according to their behavior during specific events and occasions. No one was born to be a taker or a provider; people can act in both ways. Sometimes it is up to us to help them bring one side or the other to the surface. Besides, being a taker is not always easy and being a giver is not always as innocent and generous as it sounds. Those who are happy to give are often insecure, and they will just try to ”buy” respect and appreciation through kind gestures. Of course, overcoming our insecurities in a way that is useful for others and ourselves is a good thing, but the idea that givers are just so self-sufficient that they have love to spare is not always correct. At the same time, takers often show gratitude which is the ultimate form of offering.

    Teaching and learning differ like day and night
    When we interact with people on particular occasions, we tend to take roles depending on our personalities. Especially in institutions like schools and colleges, classrooms will have a bunch of students and one teacher or professor in each classroom. Yet, when the lesson begins, and the lecture gets developed, you will see that both sides have a lot to offer. Students teach their professors a variety of lessons while they sit down to listen to their lectures. Students will not educate the teacher about the topic that is being discussed. However, they will help him develop self-awareness and understanding of others. How they react to the lecture gives plenty of information about the teacher. Was the lecture interesting? Did the teacher develop a special bond with the students? Was he aware of the topic he taught? Ultimately, we cannot be sure who learned more from this procedure. Also, keep in mind that many students may not have even listened to their teacher, and therefore they are not the ones who learned for sure.

    Introverts and extroverts are the two sides of the same coin
    For some reason, people tend to think that introverts are good listeners and extroverts are good talkers. Combining this with the idea we described before, we can understand the confusion in people’s minds regarding personalities. The two categories have different brain structures. Still, the behavior someone will develop depends on several things, including the individual’s intentions and how the family has brought them up. Both approaches exist in every individual, and people are more than random labels that others put on them to judge them faster.
