Reasons For Student Underperformance – How To Be Successful In Exams
- They don’t identify the problem
This is indeed a very common reason for low performance in many cases. Sometimes we prefer to improve what we are already good at rather than try to focus on the points we are weak at. This simply happens because we prefer to see ourselves succeed rather than watch ourselves underperform cause it makes us disappointed. This means that we partially have a difficulty in identifying our weak points. Without realizing it we don’t focus on practicing on the areas that need improvement. Great help here could come from an outside source. It is our teachers’ job to let us know how we are doing before the final exam comes. At the same time, we can ask friends or our parents to give us a hint about what they think of our performance in detail so that we realize where the problem lays. - Stress is hard to handle
Stress could be the number one reason why students underperform on a final exam. The thought that the result is crucial for their future and that it is affecting them in a severe way can make their psychology break. For this case, there are not many quick tips you can adapt. Apart from meditation and physical exercise which have scientifically been proven to decrease stress levels, the situation demands a different mindset that starts from within. In other words, a different point of view has to be obtained in order for the subject to become more relaxed. Another thing that perhaps you could do to help is to ask your close ones to help you with that and remind you of the level of significance of the particular exam in your life. - They lack proper strategy at studying
As mentioned before, studying itself is not going to solve any problem unless it becomes effective. There are numerous techniques to achieve that some of which we have discussed in previous articles. Schools will teach you the subject but they will never bother to show you how to study at home. You will either be ambitious enough to find out yourself or lucky to read it on the web. The most crucial part lies in your ability to manage your time and be organized. An organized schedule, a plan of clear goals for each day’s task, and a tight space will be reflected in the way your mind will start organizing the information that arrives and put them in the right boxes. - The time of the exam also needs a technique
Often students are well-prepared, however, when it comes to exams they seem to blow up. Once you achieve a certain level of understanding of the desired subject you have to focus on what to do in the exam. Try to respond to the questions of previous exams of the lesson and see how you can handle your time. Check what will happen if you answer the easy questions at first and leave the more challenging for the end. The result will be that you will probably be able to reach the pass level. After that, your psychology will help you succeed even further. - They are not efficient
To begin with, let’s not forget that the examination is a way to measure how deep is the understanding of an individual over a particular subject. Failing in the exams sometimes means that you are simply not good enough for what you are being tested and this is reflecting on your grades. Instead of avoiding reality, focus on how to change things over that point. Study harder if that is necessary. Smart studying can replace hours of ineffective effort but cannot replace the total lack of studying. - Lack of healthy motivation
Researchers claim that teenagers who perform well at school most of the time put in a lot of effort only to satisfy their parents. Unfortunately, this is a practice we often adopt later on in our lives too. Every time you sit down to take an exam you have to remember the reason why you are doing it. This will help you out to have a healthy aspect of your overall attempt to succeed in the upcoming challenge and focus on the exam.
