Bryan Tayefeh Shares How He Balances Work, Fitness, and Family
Bryan Tayefeh is a perfect example of wanting to do more in a typical day than there are hours in a day. From spending time with family to exercising to working full time to helping his friends and clients, he creates time for it all.
“I apply a very scientific process to almost everything I do,” he said in a recent interview with Ideamensch. This means he actively tries to plan ahead for as much as he can, whether it’s fleshing out an idea or charting the path of an entire new process from start to finish.
Bryan Tayefeh says this helps him stay organized and on top of things mentally, which is crucial for anyone trying to accomplish as much as he does in so many diverse directions.
This level of planning, whether performed mentally or often on actual paper, also helps him remain agile and flexible if anything does change – as life often does. If you are able to anticipate what might be coming, even types of interruptions or distractions, you can keep your momentum with only a bit of a detour, rather than having to throw out the entire schedule and feeling frustrated that everything is ruined.
To Bryan Tayefeh, the more data that can be acquired, the more accurate planning and predictions can be for future next steps.
For instance, he’s always calculating ways to boost sales or increase site traffic in the short term and the long term. He also looks for ways to improve other processes in his workforce, one step at a time. The methodical process usually yields positive results.
This type of consistent attention to the smallest details but also always keeping the bigger picture in mind is key, whether Bryan Tayefeh is planning to spend part or all of the day with his business colleagues, his family, or his conditioning peers – or get to know others!
A Normal Day
For those curious about how Bryan Tayefeh spends a standard day, the short answer is “it depends on the day” and what projects await him in his different roles as an employee, an entrepreneur or as a father/husband.
His morning usually starts with spending time with his wife and his twin boys. Then he’s off to work, where he’s Business Development Director/Business Lead for Ionis Pharmaceuticals, a company that’s considered a corporate leader in RNA therapeutics. This role, which he’s had for the last 12 years, includes building new accounts, checking in with existing accounts, negotiating partnerships and exploring other forms of technology the company can potentially consider in the future, especially cutting-edge products that can lead to disease cures and ways to help people medically.
Part of these efforts includes checking in regularly with his bosses and co-workers to make sure all details are met with various accounts.
Although Bryan Tayefeh runs his own company, Tayefeh Fitness, on the side, he also enjoys working for others in his Ionis role, especially in an environment where he can work toward the greater good as well as have the freedom to be flexible.
Of course, this was all pre-COVID. These days, most meetings with clients are done via Zoom or similar video conferencing programs instead of direct visits. Or team meetings may take place remotely instead of at the office. Contracts and other legal documentation can also be reviewed online instead of hard copies.
“With COVID-19, I’ve learned to expect the unexpected, and I’ve also gotten great at adapting to this new way of life,” he told Professional Tales. Even though the changes in interactions have been challenging, he’s proud that he’s kept clients happy.
The Other Job
Later in the afternoon, it’s usually time for exercise, time to work with clients, or sometimes both. As CEO of Tayefeh Fitness, Bryan Tayefeh not only helps them build their physical strength but improve other aspects of their life, including their nutrition.
The idea for this type of personal training business took hold after he had many workout sessions with friends, family, and co-workers. He said eventually his workout partners began seeking advice and asking random fitness questions, since whatever he was doing was making a big difference in his physique as well as his performance. However, his partners weren’t seeing the same results, so they wanted to know how to duplicate what he was doing.
So he began helping and motivating others and sharing the secrets to his success as an actual business.
This includes creating customized bodybuilding strategies for each client as well as helping them develop healthy meal plans that include supplements, macros and more.
He stresses physical well-being as well as mental well-being. He also shares advice on how to find the time in their busy lives and then want to put in the time to get optimal results.
He also educates clients about the mechanics of lifting and strength training, another area that’s sometimes missing even when people start going to a gym or working out at home.
This isn’t just about the client either – as a personal trainer, he has a responsibility to keep his clients motivated and educated. This goes beyond telling them to do a bunch of exercises with unfamiliar names or movements or just “lots of reps.”
Many of his clients have professional business backgrounds like he does, so lack the foundation in fitness and optimal ways to stay in shape, including basic lifting techniques. That’s where he’s happy to start the process of teaching the principles of what to do for exercise and how to do it correctly and safely.
Depending on the day, Bryan Tayefeh may meet with one or two clients in the late afternoon or early evening. But he doesn’t like to have too many of these meetings at once. This keeps him from over-committing and also makes sure each client gets plenty of attention and no one is rushed.
Prior to COVID-19, he would often squeeze in time for his own work-out and cardio efforts before or after a client session at the gym, but now he does much of his exercise at home.
Family Time
The evening also can be a time for Bryan Tayefeh to focus on spending time with his boys and his wife and have healthy meals. (Although there are still some late nights where he’s still charting out a plan for a client or doing his own bodybuilding.)
The right food is crucial for peak performance, and he regularly tries to find the proper balance between plant-based proteins and animal-based proteins.
While animal-based proteins have many advantages to bodybuilders, they may have some negative consequences for long-term health. He likes meat and isn’t a vegan, but has learned from vegan colleagues about some exciting options in plant-protein options.
More choices for plant-based proteins allows him to find more ways to work these in as protein substitutes and cut back on the amount of animal proteins.
These efforts aren’t just for clients either: he’s enjoyed trying these items himself to boost his own protein intake.
Family time can also take the form of vacation time, something the Tayefeh family tries to enjoy regularly, preferably somewhere sunny with water nearby.
Bryan Tayefeh loves all sports but especially loves snowboarding and surfing. He’s become a fan of underwater photography, and other underwater sports including freediving and spearfishing.
Overall, Bryan Tayefeh loves that every day is a little different. Though he has a lot of projects in motion, he also tries not to get too overwhelmed and gives himself permission to take breaks as needed. At the same time, he is always looking ahead to ways to do business better and be a better person.
“I work hard, but I’m always aware of my personal limits,” he said.
