The world knows the United Kingdom as an important educational center—something which has been its identifying feature for centuries. This is the same country where thousands of great personalities across the world have studied and gone on to contribute to the development of the world in one way or another. I know that most students in my country aim to find a seat in any of the many prestigious universities in the United Kingdom. Just like those in my country, there are many more students abroad sharing a similar dream.

Availing educational opportunities in the United Kingdom is an absolutely great option. The local conditions are largely student-friendly, making it easier to adjust and thrive. However, the more important question is where to apply. Of course, there are many universities to consider. Some of them, though, is the world’s best. Competition for a few seats in these universities is intense so you are expected to show exemplary academic credentials to make the cut. What are those universities? Read along and you will know.

  1. The University of Oxford
    It is unimaginable to talk about English universities without the mention of Oxford University. The oldest university in the English-speaking world, it is said to have been in existence as far back as 1096 AD. It basically operates through several constituents yet autonomous colleges and halls and offers the largest and most stunning libraries in the world. Oxford University is known for its strong emphasis on research as a result of which it ranks among the top in terms of scholarship and research output. Presently, its alumni base comprises more than 200,000 people and includes the most notable such as Oscar Wilde, Bill Clinton, Stephen Hawkings, and High Grant.
  2. University of Cambridge
    You might not know this but Cambridge University wouldn’t be here without Oxford University. Following a dispute, a group of scholars left the latter and formed an association that ultimately became the formidable University of Cambridge. Coming second to Oxford University, it is the oldest university in the English-speaking world having been established in 1209. Its academic organization comprises 31 constituent colleges and 6 schools. Its schools include Humanities and Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, and Physical Sciences and Technology. Its prestige is reflected in the many reputed personalities who have studied here which includes as many as 92 Nobel Laureates.

    Among the top 10 of the world, Imperial College London is a distinguished research university that was founded following the merger of a number of colleges in 1907. The primary focus of the university is in the field of science, business, technology, and medicine. The university has a large community of international students which are almost 60 percent of the total number of students enrolled. Moreover, its excellent alumni base is as amazing as it sounds and comprises who’s who in various fields such as Turin Award Winners, Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Nobel laureates, and Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

    Formally called UCL, University College London is another respectable public research institution and receives the largest number of enrolment in the country. Inspired by the ideas of the utilitarian Jeremy Bentham, it was founded in 1826 and is one of the founding institutions of the University of London. With a solid international reputation, it has been the recipient of memberships in many reputed academic organizations such as the League of European Research Universities. Presently, there are 11 faculties which include those of Brain Sciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and Arts and Humanities. Its alumni include founding fathers of many nations, Nobel Laureates, Fields medalists, and notable inventors.

    One of the most remarkable educational institutions in the United Kingdom, the University of Edinburgh has been home to many venerable individuals such as JK Rowling and Charles Darwin. It is an esteemed member of the League of European Research Universities and the Russell Group and is known for its association with the Royal Family.
