Our Health In Mind: CEOs Jon Fisher and Doug Hampers, M.D. Share Game-Changing Vision for Medtech and Training

CrowdOptic CEO Jon Fisher

The coronavirus outbreak has revealed that both our healthcare programs and medical care laws need some serious reform. But talk is cheap, especially with a lack of execution.

For CEOs Jon Fisher and Douglas Hampers, M.D., execution is all they know, and by integrating A.I. with bioskills, telehealth is now able to save countless lives.

Meet entrepreneur and visionary Jon Fisher and orthopedist, Douglas Hampers, who together have brought viable MedTech to telehealth.

Fisher also happens to be on the Biden for President Finance Committee, is known for building successful companies such as Bharosa (later acquired by Oracle).

You may have heard Fisher’s name going around after his commencement speech at the University of San Francisco went viral, as he shared to USF graduates the reward of being both a successful entrepreneur and family man, without having to give either up.

“Everybody wants to be Elon Musk, but you can still get to a high level of success without getting to that level,” he shared with Resident Magazine in a previous interview. “In this world we’re living in, I’m trying to project a bit of a refreshing message out there. It’s something that I’ve practiced for a long time. I’m just trying to be a person in Silicon Valley. You can change the world and live under the radar and still feel like what you’re doing is super rewarding.”

Fisher’s latest venture, CrowdOptic, known for its augmented-reality technology, recently announced its partnership with National Bioskills Laboratories (NBL) to deliver real-time streaming of ongoing operations to medical students and physicians, the company’s tech allows for A.I. and bioskills to come together, allowing for remote attendees and trainers to view the surgeries and to engage in simulcast training.

Doug Hampers, MD, MBA and CEO of National Bioskills Labs

Hampers, an orthopedist, is CEO and president of National Bioskills Laboratories (NBL), who was “the first student to enter and complete a combined MD/MBA program at Dartmouth College.” After completing the program, Hampers went on to a 6-year residency and fellowship in Orthopaedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.

Fun fact, Hamper’s father started one of the first outpatient dialysis clinics in the country, which grew to become the world’s largest provider of dialysis treatments. It was eventually sold to Fresenius for $4.4 billion in the 1990’s.

Dr. Hampers largely attributes his success in private practice to attending and completing many bioskills training labs each year, but found it difficult to attend them frequently. “It was this point that I decided that having multiple, high-quality bioskills labs throughout the country would make attendance at these training events easier, and thereby ensure more attendance. This would ultimately result in better care for patients across the United States.”

Headquartered in Pittsburgh and one of the first physician-founded and board-certified surgical training companies, NBL provides medical device companies and physicians with full-service planning and execution for hands-on training events with high-powered technology, like CrowdOptic. It conducted its very first operation on June 23 at its newest (and third) facility in San Francisco.

But as physicians get farther out into their careers, Dr. Hampers points out, “there is an obvious need and incentive for what we refer to in medicine as ‘life-long learning’, thereby ensuring that we are properly utilizing the latest techniques and are confident in using the latest implants safely. As well, some new implants or devices are labeled by the FDA as ‘restricted use’ unless a physician has been properly trained.”

“We offer ‘hands-on’ practice for physicians or any health service provider by utilizing cadaveric specimens and allowing the MedTech firms to train those individuals that will be on the front lines, delivering the much needed, highest quality care to their patients.,” Hampers emphasized.

So, as Fisher so deeply emphasized in his commencement speech, “how do we sacrifice a lot to save the planet if we can’t even sacrifice a little?”
