The United States was named the most competitive economy in the world, according to the WEF, with Singapore assuming the number 2 slot and Germany coming in as the third most competitive economy. Switzerland was No. 1 last year.

Switzerland, Japan, Netherlands, and Hong Kong ranked 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th respectively. The U.K. was named the eighth most competitive economy in the world.
The WEF ranks 140 countries according to 12 pillars or factors that measure economic readiness. Each nation is rated on a scale of 1 to 100.
