Mozambique Talks about Energy Projects with TotalEnergies CEO

Mozambique’s President, Daniel Chapo, recently met with Patrick Pouyanne, CEO of TotalEnergies, to deliberate on key energy initiatives in the country. Among the topics discussed was the long-delayed $20 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, which has been stalled since 2021 due to security concerns. The project, initially planned to resume construction by late 2024 and begin production by 2029, remains in limbo as the force majeure has yet to be lifted.

During the meeting, Pouyanne reiterated TotalEnergies’ commitment to resuming operations once the necessary conditions are met. Chapo later noted that Mozambique recognizes the project’s potential to drive economic growth and is actively working to establish stability in the Cabo Delgado region to facilitate its implementation.

The discussions occurred alongside a two-day energy summit in Tanzania, where Pouyanne also spoke about other initiatives, including potential gas-to-power solutions for Mozambique’s local communities. He highlighted progress on a $5 billion hydropower project being developed in collaboration with EDF and Sumitomo. However, he underscored a significant obstacle: the lack of power transmission infrastructure.

Pouyanne pointed out that without the necessary power lines to distribute electricity, the hydropower project cannot proceed. He emphasized the need for Mozambique to attract private and international investment to fund such critical infrastructure. Without these efforts, he cautioned, energy bottlenecks could persist, hindering progress on vital projects aimed at addressing the country’s energy demands and supporting its development.

The meeting and summit underscored the complex challenges Mozambique faces as it strives to harness its vast energy potential to secure economic advancement.
