Ben Backwell Takes Helm at Global Renewables Alliance
The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) CEO, Ben Backwell, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA) for a two-year term.
According to a statement from GWEC, Backwell’s primary focus in the coming year will be driving countries to establish ambitious renewable energy targets within their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). He will also work toward ensuring that COP30 sets the foundation for achieving these goals.
Backwell emphasized the importance of clear and actionable national clean energy plans to achieve the global goal of tripling renewable energy capacity. He noted that governments must introduce ambitious targets supported by regulatory frameworks to restore investor confidence. He added that the private sector is prepared to collaborate with policymakers to accelerate implementation and transform government aspirations into tangible actions.
Backwell succeeds Julia Souder, CEO of the Long Duration Energy Storage Council, who will remain actively involved as vice-chair and a member of the GRA’s steering committee, offering continued guidance during the leadership transition.
