Microsoft Expands AI Footprint in India with $3 Billion Investment

Microsoft has unveiled plans to invest $3 billion in India over the next two years to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud capabilities, including the development of new data centers. The announcement was made by CEO Satya Nadella, who emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing AI innovation in the country.

The initiative aims to advance India’s competitiveness in the global AI landscape, with a significant focus on skill development. Microsoft plans to train 10 million people in AI skills over the next five years, underscoring its dedication to fostering long-term growth. In a statement, the tech giant explained that this investment would enable individuals and organizations across India to benefit from the ongoing AI revolution.

Satya Nadella highlighted India’s role as a rapidly emerging hub for AI innovation, describing it as a nation unlocking immense potential. He expressed that the infrastructure and training investments reflect Microsoft’s mission to position India as a global leader in AI, ensuring widespread benefits for people and organizations throughout the country.

During his visit to New Delhi, where he met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nadella reiterated these sentiments on social media. He expressed enthusiasm about Microsoft’s expanding role in India’s AI landscape and reiterated the company’s goal of ensuring the benefits of AI reach every citizen. He also shared his thoughts at Microsoft’s AI event in Bengaluru.

India has become a focal point for US tech companies, with a growing number of executives visiting the country to explore new opportunities. Microsoft’s efforts align with this trend, positioning the nation as a critical market for technology innovation.

In 2024, Microsoft launched the ADVANTA(I)GE India initiative with an initial goal of training 2 million people in AI skills by 2025. Surpassing expectations, the program has already trained 2.4 million individuals within its first year, marking a significant milestone in the company’s broader vision for AI-driven growth in India.
