EU Cracks Down on Microplastic Pollution with Stricter Nurdle Regulations
European Union member states have endorsed a plan to tighten regulations on microplastic pollution by introducing stricter rules for companies handling plastic pellets, known as nurdles. These tiny pellets, comparable in size to a lentil, serve as the building blocks for various plastic products, including car parts and kitchenware. Commonly derived from fossil fuels, nurdles often spill during production and transportation, causing significant pollution in oceans and on beaches—an issue the EU aims to mitigate.
Based on a proposal by the European Commission last year, the 27 EU countries have agreed to new regulations requiring firms to manage and transport nurdles more responsibly. Negotiations with the European Parliament on the final version of the legislation are scheduled to commence early next year.
The new rules will mandate that companies dealing with plastic pellets conduct risk assessments, implement measures to prevent accidental spills, and respond promptly to any leaks. Cleanup efforts will also be obligatory. Sea freight companies, responsible for transporting approximately 38% of all pellets in the EU in 2022, will face additional requirements, such as ensuring proper packaging and providing detailed technical information about cargo.
After the regulation takes effect, affected companies will have a transition period to adapt—three years for sea freight operators and two years for other sectors.
While some member states had argued that maritime transport should fall under the jurisdiction of the International Maritime Organization, EU data reveals the gravity of the issue. Mishandling of pellets causes up to 184,000 tonnes of pollution annually across the bloc, equivalent to 20 truckloads per day.
The EU anticipates that these measures will reduce pellet pollution by as much as 74%.
