Why Every Entrepreneur Needs a Book

Dina Marais

The saying goes that you can Google anything, but if you are looking for experts, you go to Amazon.  The thing is that only 1% of entrepreneurs become published authors and only 1% of published authors become bestselling authors.

Why, you might ask. Because it’s hard work and it requires dedication and discipline to write a book. However, the reward exponentially trumps the effort.

But first, what is in it for you as an entrepreneur?

Being a published author elevates your brand, and skyrockets your credibility and visibility. If you know how to leverage your book, it radically increases your impact and income.  Your book becomes your luxury business card. When you slide your book across the table in any meeting, you command respect and attention as the expert in the room.

You create a legacy by writing a book. We are drowning in digital information and even the most elegantly written blog post or article looses its impact the moment it is published to make way for the next brilliant piece. But when you have a book, your expertise is in a tangible format and to be enjoyed forever by your followers, clients, friends and family.

The title or status as a bestselling author opens doors for you to speak on higher level podcasts, summits, conferences and other events. Bestselling author is synonym for expert and worth listening to.

Writing your solo book is a transformational process as you dig deep to remember your journey and how you learned what you know. You can include case studies and client stories to demonstrate your expertise. Doing research into other experts in your field to confirm your theories and results leads to the expansion of your own knowledge and application.

Being a bestselling author boosts your confidence in yourself and your business, that you actually know what you are doing and talking about.

It all sounds amazing and intimidating at the same time. Right? Perhaps you have tried to write your book before. Very excitedly you started to write the first and even maybe the second day. But on the third day something happens that disrupts this new habit and three years later you realised that you could have had your book published a long time ago already.

So, what’s the solution?

3 Ways to Become a Bestselling Author

To write your solo book, consider joining a writing program where you have the support and accountability to write on a regular basis. This will assist you to cultivate a daily writing habit. When you write for 20 to 30 minutes a day you will write a substantial book in a few months.

An easier way is to contribute a chapter to a multi-author bestselling book. The word count of chapters range from 2500 to 4000 words depending on the book. The only requirement is that you can fulfil the theme or promise of the book. This is the fastest way to becoming a bestselling author.

If you are an influencer with a large community or a podcast host with more than a 100 episodes, you can collaborate with a an independent publisher and create your multi-author book, sharing the stories of your audience or clients. This is an excellent way for podcast hosts to monetise their podcast.

Publishing your book

Writing your book is only the beginning. Once written, you book needs to be edited, formatted and uploaded onto Amazon. It also needs a professionally designed cover. You can self-publish or you can work with an independent publisher. If you want to do it yourself, make sure that you publish a high-quality product, otherwise your hard work will be in vain.

Leveraging your book

Non-fiction bestselling authors don’t focus on book sales for income, but they have a course or a program based on the book so that the readers of the book become clients. You also need to leverage the status of being a bestselling author by telling your story and thereby attract people to your website where they can join your email list, and buy your book and your program.

Conclusion

Becoming a bestselling author is the #1 strategy to stand out from the noise of the online business world. Whether you write a solo book or a chapter in a multi-author book, it is up to you to see the book as an asset to grow your business and deploy it accordingly.
