Dynamic Duo: Clean Harbors Strengthens Leadership with New Board Appointments of co-CEOs
Clean Harbors, the environmental and industrial services company based in Norwell, Massachusetts, has expanded its Board of Directors with the addition of co-CEOs Michael Battles and Eric Gerstenberg. The appointments, which took effect immediately, increased the board’s membership to 13.
Alan S. McKim, the founder, Executive Chairman, and Chief Technology Officer of Clean Harbors, praised the new board members for their leadership and substantial contributions to the company. McKim noted that the company’s first 18 months under their shared leadership had been marked by significant success across all aspects, including employee engagement, shareholder value, and the execution of the company’s Vision 2027 growth strategy. He highlighted their combined expertise in operations, finance, sales, and capital allocation as a valuable addition to the board.
Gerstenberg, who has been with Clean Harbors since 1989, has held numerous senior roles over his 30-year career with the company. Before becoming co-CEO, he served as a Chief Operating Officer, where he managed the environmental sales and service divisions, as well as all operational facilities like incinerators and re-refineries, while overseeing a large portion of the workforce. His academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Syracuse University and completion of the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.
Battles joined Clean Harbors in 2013 as chief accounting officer, bringing with him extensive experience from his time at Deloitte & Touche and PerkinElmer Inc. He was promoted to Chief Financial Officer in 2016 and named co-CEO in 2023. As CFO, Battles managed the company’s finance organization, spearheaded several debt refinancing initiatives, and contributed to strategic and operational planning. In addition to his role at Clean Harbors, he also serves on the board of Casella Waste Systems. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Vermont, is a certified public accountant, and has earned a certificate in cybersecurity oversight from the National Association of Corporate Directors in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University.
With these appointments, Clean Harbors aims to fortify its strategic direction and accelerate its growth initiatives in the coming years.
