Europeans Value Democracy and Human Rights as EU’s Core Strengths, Eurobarometer Survey Reveals
A recent Eurobarometer survey reveals that Europeans see respect for democracy, human rights, and the rule of law as the European Union’s most significant strengths. According to the survey, 38% of Europeans consider democracy and human rights as key advantages of the EU. Economic, industrial, and trading power follows closely, with 34% identifying it as a major strength, while 28% highlight the positive relationships and solidarity among EU Member States as crucial to the union’s influence.
The Flash Eurobarometer 550 survey was conducted from June 25 to July 2, 2024, across the 27 EU Member States, gathering insights from 25,658 citizens through online interviews.
When asked which areas the EU should prioritize, respondents most frequently cited the environment and climate change, as well as irregular migration, both at 33%. Security and defense were mentioned by 29% of those surveyed.
Europeans also pointed to specific values that they believe the EU embodies better than other countries. The survey showed that 53% of respondents associate the EU with respect for fundamental rights and values, as well as freedom of speech and expression.
Looking ahead, 58% of Europeans are optimistic about the EU’s future, though 37% express some pessimism. When it comes to confidence in the EU’s democratic strength over the next five years, 55% of respondents feel assured, while 41% remain doubtful.
Security concerns also weigh on the minds of EU citizens, with 64% expressing anxiety about the union’s security in the coming years. However, there is cautious optimism about the EU’s economic performance, with 51% of respondents confident about its prospects, compared to 45% who are skeptical.
