Pham Hong Hai: Once at HSBC, Now the General Director of OCB
Pham Hong Hai, the former CEO of HSBC Vietnam, has been named the general director of Orient Commercial JS Bank (OCB), which is listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange. Starting his three-year contract on July 16, Hai takes over from Nguyen Dinh Tung, who served in the role for 12 years. In his new role at OCB, Hai aims to accelerate digitalization, automate processes, and streamline procedures, while also emphasizing the bank’s green strategy.
Hai, 50, holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Economics HCMC. His career at HSBC Vietnam saw him rise through various positions before becoming CEO in December 2014. He transitioned to a role at HSBC Canada in September 2019 and left HSBC in 2023 after a 28-year tenure. Before joining OCB, Hai was deputy chairman of Thien Viet Securities Company in Hanoi.
OCB, based in Ho Chi Minh City, has a charter capital of $809.6 million, positioning it among Vietnam’s mid-sized lenders. The bank reported a consolidated pre-tax profit of $47.85 million in the first quarter, a 23.5% year-on-year increase, while OCB shares closed at $0.57, down 0.35% on Monday. At its annual general meeting in April, OCB set a pre-tax profit target of $271.3 million for the year, a 66% increase from the previous year, with a strategic focus on retail banking and SMEs.
