Nielsen’s Metadata Unit Gracenote Appoints Former Snapchat Executive as First CEO

Nielsen’s metadata unit Gracenote has appointed former Snapchat executive Jared Grusd as its Chief Executive Officer, marking the first time this newly created role has been filled. Grusd assumed the position on July 8, reporting directly to Nielsen CEO Karthik Rao, who has been leading the company since September.

Prior to this, the Gracenote unit was overseen by general manager Sujit Das Munshi. Das Munshi has now been promoted to chief operating officer, another newly established C-level position at the Nielsen-owned company. As COO, Das Munshi will continue to drive the company’s growth and operational excellence by reporting to Grusd.

With an extensive background in technology, Grusd’s previous roles include chief strategy officer at Chime and Snapchat, CEO of Huffington Post, and SVP of News & Information for Verizon Media Group. He also served as general counsel and global head of corporate development at Spotify and held senior roles at AOL and Google. In 2021, he co-founded Ethiqly, an education technology company focused on AI.

Grusd expressed his enthusiasm for joining Nielsen and building on the innovation and growth achieved under Das Munshi’s leadership. He highlighted the exciting times for the industry as it embraces advanced technologies, seeking new ways to collaborate with clients and enhance market value. Grusd is eager to shape the next chapter of Gracenote.

In the announcement, Nielsen emphasized that Grusd will lead Gracenote in sustaining its accelerated growth and driving product development. This move aligns with Nielsen’s convergent TV strategy, which Rao described as crucial for expanding in streaming and leading in convergent TV media measurement. Rao commended Grusd’s background and commitment to transforming businesses to improve society, viewing it as aligned with Nielsen’s future goals.

Nielsen acquired Gracenote in 2017, and the introduction of new C-suite roles reflects the company’s confidence in the unit. Content metadata from Gracenote is vital in the streaming world, supporting search and discovery features.
