Rising Giants in Global Ethylene Production – China Leads the Way
Asian countries are set to dominate the future of ethylene production, with China and India together contributing over 42% to the global capacity expansions.
China is projected to maintain its leading position in the global ethylene market due to its significant demand and production rates. As the foremost producer of plastics and electronics, China will likely continue to expand its ethylene market share in the coming years. India, on the other hand, is expected to see capacity growth driven by its rapid industrialization and increasing demand from sectors such as packaging and automotive.
In nations like Iran and the United States, the vast availability of shale gas is a critical factor in enhancing ethylene capacity. By 2030, China’s ethylene projects, both under construction and in the pre-construction phase, are anticipated to reach a total capacity of approximately 28.2 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). Iran and Russia are also on the path of significant expansions, with expected additions of 8.69 mtpa and 7.94 mtpa, respectively, by the end of the decade.
