Robin Hayes Steps Down from his CEO role at JetBlue

JetBlue’s CEO, Robin Hayes, has announced his resignation from his position, effective February. In his place, Joanna Geraghty, the current President and COO, will assume the role of CEO and join the company’s board.

Hayes attributed his decision to step down to advice from his doctor, citing the immense challenges and stress of the role as contributing factors. He will retain his position on JetBlue’s board until his departure and will offer strategic guidance in the following months.

Geraghty, with almost two decades of experience at JetBlue, was appointed President and COO in 2018, having previously held various vice president positions and overseeing litigation and regulatory affairs.

Hayes, who has been CEO for nine years, joined JetBlue in 2008 and held various key positions before assuming the top role. His successor, Geraghty, formerly a partner at a law firm, has been actively involved in JetBlue’s efforts to acquire Spirit Airlines. The attempted $3.8 billion acquisition faced opposition from the US Justice Department in March 2023, a move Hayes criticized, asserting that the merger would create a robust national low-cost, high-quality competitor against the dominant Big Four carriers controlling approximately 80% of the US market.

The transition plan, thoroughly established by the board, reflects confidence in Geraghty’s readiness for the CEO role due to her pivotal involvement in JetBlue’s daily operations and the strategic positioning that has steered the airline toward success, according to Hayes.
