Mark Cuban begins the year with a net worth of $6.2 billion

Mark Cuban Profile

Mark Cuban, a successful entrepreneur and investor, has a history of selling his ventures at the right time. Before the dot-com bubble burst, he sold his radio-streaming website, broadcast.com, and purchased the Dallas Mavericks in 2000 for $285 million. Under his ownership, the team won three division titles, two conference championships, and an NBA championship before he sold them to Adelson for $3.5 billion. Cuban retains a minority stake in the team. Currently, the Dallas Mavericks are owned by investors Miriam Adelson (Majority Ownership) and Mark Cuban (Minority Ownership).

Patrick Dumont, Adelson’s son-in-law and president and chief operating officer of the Las Vegas Sands company, will serve as Mavericks governor. Adelson is the surviving spouse of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. Cuban is expected to maintain control of basketball operations, and there’s no indication the club will leave Dallas.

Mark Cuban has owned the Dallas Mavericks since 2000. He transformed the team, which was once a lackluster expansion franchise added to the NBA in 1980, into a powerhouse in the 2000s led by Dirk Nowitzki. In 2011, the team won their first and only championship so far. The sale of the team by the Adelsons is primarily due to their interest in establishing destination gambling in Texas. The casino industry, led by Las Vegas Sands as recently as 2022, has been lobbying the Texas state legislature to loosen the state’s strict laws against gambling. Since 2018, the majority of states, including New York, have legalized sports betting, leading to the revitalization of other efforts to expand the casino business outside of Nevada, such as the Texas battleground.
